Celebrating Black History Month with A Song
American Thinker ^ | Jerry Jacover

Posted on 02/08/2023 8:38:14 PM PST by rlmorel

This excellent article from The American Thinker is a discussion of the merits of criticisms leveled by the Left at the Disney movie from the Sixties Song Of The South.

"In celebrating Black history month this year, I thought it would be fitting to finally recognize a triumph of African American literature that has, ironically, been falsely accused of racism. That achievement is embodied in a 1946 Walt Disney movie entitled Song of the South. I assume many of you have not seen the film because Disney has succumbed to the accusations of racism by refusing to re-release it in any form. Nonetheless, you may at least recognize the film’s buoyant Academy Award winning song, “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” which arguably forms the musical backbone of the movie..."

This analysis by Jerry Jacover is reasoned and thoughtful.

Like many people, I saw the wonderful Disney feature "Song Of The South" as a child. It had been many decades since, and I heard some controversy about it's purported racism, so I thought it might be interesting to watch it again. Time passed, and by the time I got around to attempting to watch it, I could not find it.

I couldn't rent it.

I couldn't easily buy it.

I admit, I was frankly puzzled by by this. In my memory, it seemed (for example) that the color of the most famous character (Uncle Remus) became far less significant than the love for a character who seemed just wonderful to a kid's sensibilities. He was an old guy all of us seemed to have somewhere during those years of our lives.

So, I was confused, and reading this article, it is pretty clear my memory is not wrong on this. A character such as Uncle Remus commanded such affection and respect from the viewers, regardless of his color, or their color.

Thank you for posting.

I downloaded a similar link a year ago, saved to multiple devices in multiple locations, and distributed to many friends with young children.

This American classic must NEVER be “cancelled”!

Song of the South's last theatrical release which I remember was in 1985.

Thanks-I always figured I could watch it somewhere like that, but I was talking about the way it was simply removed from the currents of commerce.

I have to say-that concerted disappearance from all those places really stood out to me.

It seemed very Soviet to me, very much in the spirit of the photograph of Josef Stalin and Nikolai Yezhov walking together on a bridge, and was subsequently edited to remove Yezhov out of the official photograph when he fell into disfavor and became an "unperson".

I believed that it was shown in independent movie theaters on special occasions and such after that. I could be mistaken on that. We have a theater in our small town that shows on a Saturday or Sunday, certain older classic movies. It is a beautiful small theater...also famous for being seen in several movies like "Knives Out" or "Labor Day":

It’s a great fun kids movie with a good wholesome story. I watched it two weeks ago on Bitchute and you can still find it there. There is nothing at all “waccis” about this movie.

No matter what the brainless, mindless, empty heads will find something racist. Biden made it a point to condemn racism in the killing of a black man by 5 black cops. So lori clubfoot mayor is ok to blame her murder rate on white people, and gang banger can blame the murder of an associate or rival on white people

"No, no - I mean a REAL song, like "Camptown Races".

"Camptown Races"? Don't know if I've ever heard it - how does it go"?

Zip a Dee DoDah!

My parents took us to see it. The child
in me enjoyed it tremendously. Never got around to purchase a copy when released for sale (was, however, in line to purchase the beautifuly made, FANTASIA, which is still watched to this day.)

Enjoy the movie and the memories.....

Uncle Ben and Aunt Jemima too; pleasant, smiling folks providing sustenance.
