The Nixon legacy has lessons for Biden and today’s GOP

In his second inaugural, a triumphant president claimed a mandate and sought a legacy. He had won a true landslide — 60 percent of the popular vote. He won all but one state in the Electoral College. Only George Washington and James Monroe had done better, with unanimous Electoral College reelections.

That reelected president was Richard Nixon, re-inaugurated 50 years ago in January 1973. After his second inaugural address, his popularity stood at 67 percent.

Nixon had campaigned in 1972 on prosperity and world leadership, and on the promise of peace. The economy was booming, with a real growth rate of 6.4 percent, falling unemployment (5.1 percent at the end of 1972), and 3 percent inflation. He did this, despite being the first president elected in 120 years without his party controlling either house in Congress.

And yet, within nine months, Nixon’s presidency was consumed by the Watergate scandal and economic turmoil, and his popularity had fallen to 30 percent.

Joe Biden was also sworn-in in January 1973 — as a freshman senator. Five decades later, as President Biden prepares for his State of the Union before a deeply divided Congress, what — if anything — can both branches learn from Nixon’s reelection success and second-term failure?

CIA screwed Nixon over with Watergate. Media could not figure out how why Nixon won so big over McGovern because nobody they knew voted for Nixon.

Nixon was also screwed in the 1960 election when Illinois’ infamous “Crook County” suddenly found enough ballots for JFK.

Nixon, instead of contesting, chose to accept the fraud for the good of the country.

The spying that Obama’s and Biden’s FBI did on Trump makes Watergate look like child’s play.

What state did Nixon supposedly lose? Minnesota? Wasn’t that McGovern’s home state?

I bet they cheated. Hell, at this point given everything that has been laid bare, it turns out Dewey really DID defeat Truman. All of the Watergate “plumbers” were CIA, and Woodward had never worked for a newspaper before.

Then we got Ford, a company man acceptable to the Washington machine. Followed by Carter, who gently told us to turn our thermostats down, and wear a sweater. At least they weren’t outlawing cars or gas stoves at that point.

If you live long enough you can see the incremental steps they have been taking bit by bit, to strangle everyone and destroy the country. They don’t need to hide it much now, but at one time they did.

Too liberal for my tastes but Nixon shouldn’t have stepped down.

He had to, or they would have Impeached in the House and convicted in the Senate.

You sure that wasn’t for the RAT primary?
The primary was what spelled the end for Humphrey’s run. Remember the quote, “Don’t buy another vote, I won’t pay for a landslide!” That was Joe Kennedy during the primary.
Back then, WV was reliably RAT. The biggest problem JFK faced in WV in 1960 was that he was Catholic. That was taken care of by Poppa Joe in the primary. Once his boy was on the ticket, WV posed no problem.

” Illinois’ infamous “Crook County” “

Grew up there. By the time I was in 2nd grade, I knew that dead people could vote.

In the Nixon era there was a limited small number of networks and there was fear from leftist media bigs that if they were the first to go full socialist they would be abandoned and die.

Now they are all socialist. There is no truth in media coverage and it is all Kabuki theater.

One elector voted against Monroe in the 1820 election. He ran unopposed but one elector apparently thought Monroe wasn't up to the job.

Curiously, Missouri's electoral votes were counted although its official date of admission is 1821.
