>>Don’t ask me why they would want to make hydrogen from electricity in large quantity.
Hydrogen is needed to smelt iron ore, make ammonia for fertilizer, and to make cement.
I thought the Krauts learned all about hydrogen back there in zeppelin days.
” Natural gas is as “green” as it comes. Idiots. “
Well, yes, of course, but it’s also cheap as hell, which is unacceptable.
The production of hydrogen plays a key role in any industrialized society, since hydrogen is required for many essential chemical processes.[3] In 2020, roughly 87 million tons of hydrogen was produced[4] worldwide for various uses, such as oil refining, in the production of ammonia through the Haber process, and in the production of methanol through reduction of carbon monoxide. The global hydrogen generation market was valued at US$135.94 billion in 2021, and expected to grow to US$219.2 billion by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.4% from 2021 to 2030.

I know. But that is not hydrogen for day to day use by the public.
A pipeline gets funding from American taxpayers. Just like he fusion hype news from a couple of weeks ago that had the same results as the last one.
We are stupidly following people who lie to us constantly… and who openly state we should lose our children or be left to die.
They are serious and we are not.
The pipeline under the Mediterranean Sea will carry green hydrogen, made from water via electrolysis using renewable energy.
~~~~
Nope. Not buying it. If Italy can produce hydrogen using “renewable energy” then the countries on the other end of the pipeline can too. This pipeline has another purpose.
Hmmm.......wondering how much energy (electrical?) is used/needed to make green hydrogen?
Anyone know?
“That’s just the in the weeds technical details - think how much better everyone will feel!”
but, but, but pipelines are EEEEEVIL ....
“Hmmm.......wondering how much energy (electrical?) is used/needed to make green hydrogen?”
more than can be extracted when the hydrogen is subsequently burned ... basic application of the 2nd law of thermodynamics ...
Just like the new Knives Out movie. Interesting
It actually takes more energy to produce the hydrogen than the hydrogen produced can provide and most of the water destroyed will never be replaced, ever
maybe Elon Musk can go find a chunk of ice on mars and tow it home
Hydrogen just loves to give up energy by oxidation. You have the problem backwards: It takes a lot of energy to crack water into oxygen and hydrogen.
And yes, it's a stupid idea for several reasons. "Losing water" isn't one of them.
