2022 Census Data Anomalies
Puerto Rico had the lowest birth rate* at 6.06%, Vermont was next at 8.25%, followed by Maine at 8.71%. The rest of the states were between 9 and Utah at 14%. All six New England states were in the top 11 (inc. PR) of the lowest birth rates.
* 2021 Pop + 2022 Pop = X, divide X by 2 = Y. Divide # Births by Y = Birth Rate
25 states (inc. PR) had a net decrease in natural change (births over deaths). West Virginia 6.8%, PR 4.45% and Maine 4.3% were the outliers. The rest of the negative states were less than 3%. DC, Texas, Alaska and Utah had the highest net increase in natural change. (Note: the smaller the state or territory, the easier to have higher increases or decreases – 1 baby in DC is probably equal to 10 babies in Texas in moving the needle).
West Virginia had the highest death rate at 16.65% followed by Mississippi and Kentucky at 13.5% and 13.5%. Again Utah was on the bottom of the list at 6.95%
As a resident of Maine, I am naturally interested in our numbers and comparing the to NH which has a similar population and demographics.
Maine's population (1,377,238 to 1,385,340) increased by 8,102 while NH (1,387,505 to 1,395,231) increased by 7,726 a difference of 376. NH had 640 more births (12,030 vs 12,670) and Maine had 3,273 more deaths (17,973 vs 14,700). Both states added people via domestic and international migration. The surprising number being that Maine gained 11,600 through domestic migration and only 2,525 via international migration vs NH, 6,303 and 3,900. This resulted in nets of 14,125 and 10,203 which explains why NH only gained 376 more people that Maine.
So the Mormons are the only ones ‘going forth’ and ‘multiplying?’
It’s so lonely, honey
In the state of Maine.......................
I the "race" question, I selected "other" and wrote in "American Citizen," since they were not allowed to ask that.
Maine is much more rural than NH. Remember, most of NH population is in the southern counties. Portland is decent sized, but once you get up the coast a bit….Maine thins right out.
My point is that NH should read more like MA.
I write in Native American.
Could there be just a “lag” factor, simply because young people weren’t going out in 2020, not meeting new people, getting married, and starting families?
Given that roughly 1/3 of the women in PR were sterilized in the 1960s, I can’t say I’m surprised that the birthrate is so low. I wonder what they put in the drinking water down there? And I’m only half-kidding.
Women sterilized in the 1960s are well past birthing age.
I noted that for this data, birth rate was defined differently than it is normally defined.
Megwetch!
This data is not based on the census itself or other questionnaires. The Census Bureau derives these estimates from various data sources such as USPS moving data, etc.
PR, Vermont, maine, have some of the older demographics in the America. Opp for DC, Utah, Alaska and Texas. Vast differences in age at times.
Ah, thanks. But are you sure those “other sources” don’t include the American Community Survey?
Fewer Somalis to NH?
“West Virginia had the highest death rate at 16.65% followed by Mississippi and Kentucky at 13.5% and 13.5%.”
Victims of the War on Red States.
No.
Go back and review the data I posted. Less international to Maine than NH.
