THE WASHINGTON POST: DeSantis reverses himself on coronavirus vaccines, moves to right of Trump
WaPo ^ | Dec 17 | By Isaac Arnsdorf

Posted on 12/17/2022 2:33:53 PM PST by RandFan

Early in the pandemic, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis repeatedly praised President Donald Trump for the expedited development and rollout of a coronavirus vaccine. The governor’s office pushed for $480 million in pandemic resources, including media campaigns promoting the shots, according to state budget documents. And DeSantis, a Republican, even lauded the Biden administration for helping to expand access to vaccines.

“We’re having more vaccine because of this, which is great,” DeSantis said of a federal program shipping shots to pharmacies in February 2021.

But this past week, DeSantis threw himself into misleadingly disparaging the vaccines, convening skeptics to buck guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and seeking to investigate vaccine makers for fraud.

“These companies have made a fortune off this federal government imposing or at least attempting to impose mandates, and a lot of false statements,” DeSantis said at the roundtable event on Wednesday. “I think people want the truth and I think people want accountability, so you need to have a thorough investigation into what’s happened with these shots.”

A review of DeSantis’s public positions on the vaccines shows a full reversal that has unfolded gradually since 2021, seizing on the shots’ waning efficacy against new virus variants and portraying evolving scientific advice as deliberate deceit.

The hard-line position he’s now staking out is taking on additional significance: DeSantis is widely seen as a potential presidential candidate in 2024, with many Republicans wanting him to challenge Trump for the GOP nomination and some seeing vaccines as a potential wedge issue to outflank the former president to his right.

There absolutely is NOT a constitutional obligation to 'follow the science.'

And certainly no requirement to follow agency-captured gov't swamp scientists.

People, even here, who think gov't science should drive matters of personal / medical decisions are leading us to Hell. Literally. Global warming, men can have babies, babies aren't human till mom decides not to kill them...

Trump's horrible handling of Covid would still be horrible even if his SwampJab actually worked.

His whole dang task force should be in jail according to what SuperTrump just pronounced regarding free speech.

Please cite me one clear example of “guidance” by the Trump administration that directed any governor to impose blockades manned by National Guard troops at a state border.

If a Democrat ever did such a thing, FR would be filled with public’s calls for him to be set on fire.

I don't know of any blockades at the state border. There were none here in Florida, that I am aware of, and I'm doubtful they ever happened, as I never heard of any, and had relatives come visit via intra-state road travel without any incident whatsoever.

However, regarding "guidance," that is in fact the exact term that Trump used, when he announced his quote "new guidelines for every American to follow." Trump's guidelines were for quote "all Americans, including the young and healthy" and included not gathering in groups of more than 10 people, avoiding any discretionary travel, and restrictions from eating in any restaurant.

So no, my family did not follow Trump's guidelines, which we thought were ridiculously foolish. Nor did DeSantis do anything to impede their travel in or out of the state, or us eating at restaurants, etc.

A link direct to Trump's full announcement is still on the White House website, and a direct link can be found in post 37 of this thread. Thanks.

One of the most detestable aspects of DeSantis’ travel restrictions was that he used the Federal restrictions on foreign travel as a justification for his own blatantly illegal restrictions on domestic travel.

I’m sure the establishment GOP cabal looking to peddle DeSantis as a presidential contender is doing their best to scrub all these things from the internet, but you can still find video clips of him speaking to the media back on 2020 and explaining to them that he had the authority to restrict travel from other states because the U.S. government was restricting travel from places like China and Italy.

It takes a special kind of pernicious big-government globalist @sshole to stand up in public and say that U.S. citizens should be subject to the same treatment under the law as foreign nationals.

There are at least a few Florida Freepers here who reported getting stopped at the Florida border while driving back there from Georgia. And for reasons I’ll never understand, they all seemed to be perfectly comfortable with it.

More likely on the Georgia side, if it happened. Link?

I think it’s already been established that DeSantis never “blocked” anyone from entering Florida. He required those arriving from airports in New York and New Jersey, and maybe a couple other states, only, to “self-quarantine” for a few days.

That’s quite mild compared to Trump’s guidelines to shutdown all “gatherings of more than 10 people” and “all discretionary travel” which would have shut all airports and airport traffic down.

So good job to DeSantis for standing up to Trump’s guidelines requesting “blatantly illegal restrictions on domestic travel” to use your words.

It has also been established that the Trump administration “guidelines” were exactly that … because they had no enforceability under the law, and everyone knew it.

DeSantis, on the other hand, issued clear executive orders “under the power vested in [him] as Governor of Florida” — and went to great lengths to stress that these orders were enforceable under Florida law with fines and jail time.

Links to applicable items will be posted tomorrow if I can find them. A number of them came up on several threads in the last 6-8 weeks.

And you don’t “stand up to guidelines,” dude … you just IGNORE them. Even the language you use is a pathetic attempt to pretend a career politician took a stand on anything of substance.

Why would Georgia law enforcement officers stop motorists to enforce Florida’s travel restrictions?

I'm glad that my governor implemented travel quarantines during the height of contagion. I lived it.

We were being deluged by assholes from other states that were under total lockdown, especially summer beachgoers from NY. Wanna know why we got infested? Because DeSantis saw the lockdowns being used for Dem gains by finishing off China's viral attack on Trump's yuge policy driven economic gains for America by further killing business in Blue states and would have none of it.

He knows that one of Deep state's goals is to weaken states. And FL's biggest revenue generator for the state is tourism. Beaches open for '21 spring break. Parks encouraged to open. Shit, the biggest mask totalitarians came to party in FL; Ron welcomed their revenue and made sure they were photographed for their constituents to see their maskless fun. Anyway, the travel quarantine was just smart. The tourists were willing to trade off quarantine to be able to enjoy life again free from mask overlords, and FL could limit contagion to a degree and continue generating revenue.

So you see, you are talking out your bunghole, friend. DeSantis'transition was gradual, well thought out, and consistent. No never-RDS types here are willing to give any thought to this at all. And we get responses like "Trump will announce his position change when he is good and ready", yet pooh-poohs RDS and call his announcement convenient and proof he is running even though he hasn't announced. It takes balls to go against the tide, and then later to express regrets for his previous decisions. Has Trump expressed regret for believing that bigDeepPharma could be trusted? After the mounting evidence of harm, why hasn't he at least stopped championing the jab? No, he continues to use warp speed to score points with people who would never vote for him.

With all respect old friend, it’s quite funny watching all your outrage over the extremely minor things DeSantis did in Florida, while acting if Trump’s completely draconian and fully nationwide lockdown guidelines he specifically asked FOR EVERY AMERICAN to follow had nothing to do with it.

DeSantis did nothing, and probably would have done nothing, until Trump released his lockdown guidelines. Then, he implemented nothing nearly as restrictive as what Trump requested. Then, he rescinded what little he had put in place, far in advance of most every other governor, especially any other governor in any state of comparable size.

The decisions that DeSantis made with regard to Trump’s lockdown guidelines, turned him into a hero not only here in Florida, but nationwide. Now, he’s preparing to lead a similar fight against Trump’s vaccines. Great I say. Sorry you have such sour grapes over it all. Maybe you should move to Florida, too, where woke goes to die. Or maybe you have a problem with that, too lol.

Whoa, calm down people, DeSantis was pro vaccine like trump and all other politicians, what he wasn’t was for total irrational shut downs, once fl shut down for a few months, he realized they weren’t working so he opened things up, never forced schools to mask up cause evidence and even science showed kids weren’t getting covid. When they started mandating vaccines for corporations, he drew the line. He didn’t know more than anyone else and wanted to help people. He also opened free clinics for medicine that kept 90% of covid victims out of hospitals. The same time Biden was restricting covid vaccines to Florida and even cut off the medicine (forgot the name of it, but made from blood donors of people who had previously had covid) when Biden threatened to cut off the antidote,DeSantis simply said he would buy it directly from the manufacturers and he did.
Evidence speaks for itself, if his shut downs were like the blue states, then why was half the country living in Florida back then?
He is going after the vaccine manufacturers for all the lies told about the vaccines, things he and no one else knew back then. Now we know it does not prevent covid, does not prevent spread and dubious if it makes the symptoms less severe, like how can they prove a hypothetical. Sure it’s a political ploy, but a good one nevertheless and has a solid basis. I’m a transplant in FL from PA, there is no comparison in the life in FL to our families back in PA during that time. At its worse, maybe 3/4 at most even wore masks at Walmarts and places like that, we didn’t miss a beat.

Not to criticize, but to substantiate, your point;

DeSantis didn't exactly do nothing up to Trump's guidelines announcement. After looking at the data, DeSantis (and when I write DeSantis, that is him and his teams) isolated and focused on the primary demographic must harmed by the virus and focused on isolating and checking the spread at retirement/convalescent facilities. He also announced virtual learning at the beginning as did all the other states, and then once more, evaluated the data and have the option for in-school learning.

His leadership, which was highly criticized (even by Trump) was based on the decision to actually have his teams analyze the data and decide what was best for his state and constituents.THAT is why he won by 20 points, not just because "he was running against Crist, for Cristsake". His leadership and the state's resultant economic stability, enough to tell Disney to piss up a rope, inspired lazy moderate Republicans, independents in large cities, and Latinos in the south to show up and vote.

We both are doing better everyday. Better energy levels each day and better mental abilities each day for both of us. I seem to be about 2 days ahead of my wife in the recovery process. I had the symptoms 2 days before she did.

Food tastes good to me. So, I eat 3 good meals a day.

My wife eats like a church mouse,3 times a day.
