Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) permitted Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) to keep her congressional committee assignments after she announced Friday she will leave the Democrat party and become an independent.

“Senator Sinema informed me of her decision to change her affiliation to Independent,” Schumer stated in a press release. “She asked me to keep her committee assignments and I agreed. Kyrsten is independent; that’s how she’s always been.”

Sinema sits on four Senate committees: Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs; Commerce, Science, and Transportation; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; and Veterans Affairs.

Sinema is mostly going to caucus with the Democrats anyway. So does Manchin. So does self-described “independent” Bernie Sanders.

There are three so-called independents in the Senate. All vote for Schumer and support Democrat agenda.

Sinema has been described as a moderate to conservative Democrat, being generally socially liberal but fiscally moderate-to-conservative.[121][122][123] According to the National Journal’s 2013 vote ratings, her votes place her near the center of their liberal–conservative scale.[124] The National Journal gave her a composite ideology score of 57% liberal and 43% conservative.[125]

According to the Bipartisan Index created by the Lugar Center and the McCourt School of Public Policy, Sinema was the sixth most bipartisan member of the U.S. House of Representatives during the first session of the 115th United States Congress.[126] She has cited U.S. Senator Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, as a role model.[19] She was one of the most conservative House Democrats during her tenure.[2]

In 2015 and 2016, Sinema did not vote for Nancy Pelosi for speaker of the House.[127] In 2015, she voted with the majority of her party 73% of the time.[128] The conservative group Americans for Prosperity gives Sinema a lifetime 27% rating, and the conservative Goldwater Institute gave her a 35% in 2010 when she was a state legislator; the progressive Americans for Democratic Action gave her a 60% liberal quotient.[125] In 2017, she voted in line with President Donald Trump’s position approximately half the time.[129]

According to FiveThirtyEight, as of January 2021, Sinema voted in line with Trump’s position on legislation about 50% of the time.[130] As a result, the Arizona Democratic Party suggested censuring her. But after delaying the vote[131] and watering down the resolution from a censure to an advisement,[132] it was ultimately tabled.[133]

According to FiveThirtyEight, as of July 2022, Sinema has voted with President Biden’s position on legislative issues 94% of the time.[134] On January 22, 2022, the Arizona Democratic Party executive board voted to censure Sinema for voting with Senate Republicans to maintain the filibuster, preventing passage of a voting rights bill.[135]

So nothing changes in terms of Senate control. She will continue to caucus with Dems and senate control will be based in 51 to 49, not 50-50.

Having Jeff Flake and John McCain as our AZ Senators, I am more ok with her than with Mark Kelly, but it seems like the AZ GOP is INCOMPETITENT and UNABLE to SELECT a really good candidate. McSally, who ran against Sinema, was awful, and couldn’t manage her campaign. Now, with the 2022 fraud and democrats selected, we will not be able to fix the problems with our elections to GET a good Republican over the finish line. Forgive my pessimism, it has been discouraging to say the least.

Agreed. Shw will just be a trojan horse to make republicans think she will sometimes support them. But then, she will be Lucy and pull the football away from the stupid party when they try to kick it.

McConnell is the one who forced McSally on us and it’s McConnell who torpedoed Masters. Go with him or go against him we lose. If you are an Arizonan you know there were ten Kelly commercials on every station for each Masters they were vile outright lies and nobody called him on them.
