Time for Ukraine to talk to Russia? ‘Nuts!’
Politico ^ | 18th November 2022 | James Dettmer

Posted on 11/19/2022 2:57:12 AM PST by Cronos

No one wants to sit down with foes who bomb their homes indiscriminately and target their energy infrastructure, plunging households into darkness and forcing surgeons in hospitals to perform operations by torchlight.

And as the remains of civilians tortured by Russian soldiers occupying the southern city of Kherson are unearthed, the cold fury Ukrainians felt at the documented abuses — from rape to casually gunning down non-combatants in Bucha and Irpin — only intensifies.

.... Nuts!” also fairly sums up the reaction of “ordinary” Ukrainians I spoke with this week, as to whether they would endorse peace negotiations — and whether they’d be willing to trade any land in the Donbas, or the whole of Crimea, for peace.

Yuliya Grigor, whose soldier husband is currently undergoing treatment for severe shell shock, said Ukraine can win this fight, if the West stays true and constant. The 35-year-old charity worker, who is from Mauripol but now lives in Lviv, said, “Russians don’t understand that however many missiles they throw at us, we won’t give in, surrender or negotiate. And they can’t divide us.”

“We don’t have anything to talk about. Putin doesn’t understand Ukraine is a separate, sovereign country and is united. Anyway, he doesn’t even know the meaning of the word peace. So, there is no sense in talking with them,” she added. ...

Yuliya isn’t alone in her vehemence. I interviewed a dozen others in the underground parking lot of a Lviv shopping mall that now serves as a bomb shelter...

“I disagree, and there can be no talks, no agreements because Russia will always break any deals; you can’t trust them. All countries recognized Ukraine’s borders in 1991, and this is our country."

Whether young or old, or eastern or western Ukrainian, everyone I spoke to in the parking lot offered similar responses, with most saying Russia would only see negotiations as a sign of weakness, would rearm, and later try to grab more of Ukraine.

This is why this war is about Putin against the Ukrainian people - it’s not Zelenskyy pushing them, rather he is doing their will that they see the only way to end the war is to push the Russians out

Russians are obsessed with personally blaming Zelensky for their failures, because he refused to panic and run back in February, liked they assumed

but it’s not about him, Zelensky could be replaced tomorrow and it would make no difference ... Ukrainians know Russia is trying to destroy their country, so they HAVE to fight back

National suicide in real time. Reminds me of the Carthaginians.

plunging households into darkness and forcing surgeons in hospitals to perform operations by torchlight

btw, one other important under-reported detail ... Russians deliberately launch all their missile attacks in the late afternoon, making first aid more difficult by forcing rescuers to work in the early-evening darkness

deliberate maliciousness which says a lot about "Christian" Russia

There is another military that operates in darkness, one that prefers darkness. Think hard….

Ukraine, you are not actually a sovereign nation if another nation has to not only foot the bill for your war and supply the weapons but also has to pay to keep your entire country’s economy afloat.

wrong, sovereignty is inherent and doesn’t depend on support

and Russia already promised to recognize Ukraine’s sovereignty (as well as all the other former Soviet members) back in 1991, when the old Soviet Union broke up

since then Russia gone back on its promise by attacking Armenia, Georgia, and Ukraine

but it’s interesting they way excuses are constantly made to deny Ukraine’s sovereignty now ... it reeks of Russian desperation to justify their illegal invasion

“just sayin” ...

Well, the Ukrainians will probably not raze Moscow to the ground, sew Russia’s fields with salt, and sell the Russian populace into slavery, but the Russian’s are indeed committing national suicide…

They wouldn’t have had to if Yanukovych hadn’t sold out his national financial independence AND enabling an invasion of his country to Putin in return for billions of rubles, Russian sanctuary, and a promise of being installed as Gauleiter For Life if Russia had been successful in its hostile takeover in 2014.

Ukraine may well have been able to be self sufficient if it hadn’t had Russia constantly throwing spanners into the works.

You know in 2013 Russia pledged billions in life support bailouts to Ukraine if it binned EU integration and locked itself into an exclusive Russia First deal. They never came up with the goods. Instead they invaded Crimea with Yanukovych colluding.

Gangsterism in action. Offer a bailout on condition of control down the line, add penalties for default, then rob the victim while stalling the loan.

Putin’s regime knew exactly what it was doing to a cordial neighbor that didn’t threatened it in any way at all, and the sad thing is, there are people in the west who call themselves conservatives, who think Russia had justification AND think Ukraine deserved it.

With hindsight Ukraine should’ve strung Yanukovych up on a lamp post, signed the EU trade deal, told Putin’s to pound sand, and got hold of a nuke to strike Moscow if one boot crossed the border.

The Ukrainian people are victims of both America and Russia and of course their own corrupt leaders. War with Russia was never in their best interest. It was avoidable. America is NOT your friend. Recently, America’s government has undergone a coup of sorts and is no longer the same country. We are not to be trusted. Just look at what is happening to your country. Remember we did the negotiating with Russia before the war. We didn’t do such a great job did we?. Many suspect that is because America wanted this war. Many Americans are ashamed of their own country and blame them for this horrible war.

They never should have let this happen.

The country was united and at peace until then.

Yanukovich was a corrupt Russian stooge

and he wasn’t “forced to flee”, he ran like a coward back to Russia

Why does Ukraine want to retake all its territories?

Stories like this one certainly play a role.

Russian soldiers broke into the home of Oleksandr and Natalia Darmobid in the Zaporizhia Region a few days ago.

They raped Natalia and then shot all 4 family members to death.

War with Russia was never in their best interest. It was avoidable.

How was war avoidable, when Putin states Ukraine is a historical mistake and should not exist as an independent country?

obviously, Ukraine was supposed be “reasonable” and just surrender to Russia

that’s his solution to avoiding war

Re: 16 - Part of the issue in all sides of this war are the claims being made with little, if any verification.

Do you have a link to the claim you are making? Thank you.

“deliberate maliciousness which says a lot about “Christian” Russia”

So launching missiles in broad daylight is OK then? Please name a war where either side has not carried out attacks in the night time. Maybe they should put a hold on things until spring time because of the cold weather.
