Democrat Josh Shapiro defeated far-right Republican Doug Mastriano in the Pennsylvania governor’s race on Tuesday, NBC News projected, providing Democrats with a significant victory in a contest where oversight of the 2024 election and abortion rights took center stage.
Just after 10:30 p.m. ET, Shapiro held a lead of more than 13 points over Mastriano.
Shapiro, the state attorney general, framed his opponent as an extremist and sought to make his campaign about protecting Pennsylvanians’ freedom to vote, to access abortion care and to unionize. Mastriano, a state senator who led the charge to try to overturn President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in the state, generated a core of grassroots GOP supporters during the primary but was unable to broaden his coalition.

The polls did not have it this far apart, which does not bode well for Oz. Then again, I predicted “Senator Fetterman”, which seems to be better than 50/50.
Thanks a lot, RINOs. They’re happy for a Rat to win as long as MAGA loses.
Not surprised at all. Shapiro who I despise came across as sane and campaigned well. Mastriano was just awful.
I hope nobody is surprised by this. Mastriano may have run the most awful GOP campaign in this election cycle.
Pennsylvania, a glutton for punishment.
Oz is under performing everywhere.
I’m so sick of RINOs.
Most PA voters who were not politically astute only knew Mastriano from what they saw in Shapiro’s campaign ads. That’s a terrible way to run a campaign.
Well, you can kiss Pennsylvania, and the presidency, goodbye in 2024.
I am so sick....
McConnell’s fault.
The Pennsylvanians are as hopeless as the Arizonans.
Wow, this says a lot about you. What? Did you want a f'g RINO to run?
You betcha.
Just shows how mentally ill Pennsylvanians are.
I was faintly hoping for a surprise in the other direction, I don't think his strategy was awful per se... but the holes in the strategy could be seen from a mile away.
The difference maker was Mastriano letting Shapiro define him as a nut and not doing what was necessary to have resources to counter that message was dumb. Having Oz run one campaign and Mastriano run a different campaign, courting different voters did neither candidate a service.
If Sean Parnell was the candidate instead of Oz, I still think this would have been a win for both because they would have been working together, and I'll not soon forget the lesson that the democrat machine sabotaging the GOP primary should teach.
No it shows just how pathetic a campaign this candidate ran.
He never had the establishment behind him, and he ran just a wretchedly bad campaign.
No one should be surprised Mastriano got trounced.
