Is the idea of ‘maternal instinct’ a myth?
Washington Post ^ | October 31, 2022 | Rebecca Gale

Posted on 10/31/2022 9:45:45 AM PDT by C19fan

Like so many women in this country, Chelsea Conaboy went back to work shortly after having her first baby. She sat in a makeshift closet, trying to pump breast milk, and wondered when the magical “maternal instinct” she’d heard so much about would kick in.

Disclaimer: I read only the opening paragraphs because that was enough to see. Despite the overwhelming evidence of maternal instincts in vertebrates including extinct ones, for example, Maiasaurs, this women and the Washington Post claims the Maternal Instinct is a myth? The science is settled on this one the Maternal Instinct is in the very makeup of our DNA.

Let me see, a few “gay” penguins....human homosexuality is perfectly natural.
Vertebrate mothers taking care of offspring....the Maternal Instinct is a myth.

I am sooooo glad the Bezo Post has articles like this. Obviously, women should get abortions instead of having babies do they can only miss a minimal amount of time from their job at Amazon. A stable workforce is worthy of murder.

Is the idea of ‘maternal instinct’ a myth?

If it was a myth, life higher on the evolutionary scale than fish would even exist.

Try f’n with a newborn calf when its mom is nearby, then get back to me on your ‘myth’ delusion.

Very good post! You nailed it.

I would add “100 million years of mammalian maternal care.”

Because WaPo’s female readers are DC-centric, career-focused, leftist, low on the scale of normal female sensitivity and openness, often homosexual - WaPo needs to pander to them.

“The maternal instinct idea was written into scientific theory in the early part of the 20th century by religious men who had a stated interest in compelling White, well-off women to have more babies.”

My rabbit had seven babies. She built her nest the week before they were born.

She kept them hidden for a couple of weeks...she would go in the birthing box to feed them.

Then they came out and boy were they active little critters. Mama would feed them and lick them clean. Sometimes we would have to put her in another cage because she got tired.

My rabbit was brown, not white. And she wasn’t well off, she was a rabbit. I don’t know if she was particularly religious, she never said much of anything.

So who is following the “science”?

The father of one of my very best friends was gored to death by a mother cow when he got too close to her calf. He was in his early 80’s when he died and had been in the cattle business all his adult life.

My theory is that the women in our culture have been trained to be so self-centered and so selfish that this learned behavior overcomes their maternal instinct. That is the best way to explain abortion. What degree of selfishness is capable of murdering your completely innocent baby in your own womb? It is incomprehensible to me. . . .

You’ve got examples in the animal world where mothers will abandon their pups/cats/etc;

But the vast majority have a natural instinct to protect and nurture the offspring.

The vain foolishness of academics is nothing new. Rene Descartes recognized it 1637 in part 1 of his Discourse on Method:

For it seemed to me that I could arrive at considerably more truth in the reasoning that each man makes concerning the matters which are important to him and in which events could punish him soon afterwards if he judged badly, than in the reasoning made by a man of letters in his study concerning speculations which produce no effect and which are of no consequence to him, except perhaps that from them he can augment his vanity, and all the more so, the further his speculations are from common sense, because he would have had to use that much more wit and artifice in the attempt to make them probable.

They’re calling this a myth so that the gay fathers can now be “maternal”.

My daughter and I were once out walking by a local pond and were suddenly “attacked” by a female duck, who was doing everything in her power to lead us away from where her little ducklings were. We got a good laugh out of it, but in the final analysis we knew that what the duck was doing was serious business that might very well have ended up getting her killed. A duck doesn’t consciously think of sacrificing itself for its offspring. It’s pure instinct. Without it, an advanced species can’t survive.

Well, I’m sure maternal instinct exists, probably in most females, but my personal experience tells me it does not exist in all females. My own mother abandoned me when I was about 10 months old. She left my father and me and I never heard from her again. There are plenty of cases where women kill their own kids, or abuse them, or abandon them as mine did.

Instincts in humans are always subordinate to free will, and to our self-aware but fallen human nature. This is why the natural impulse of a woman to care for her child can be overridden and the child can be aborted or neglected after birth.

Every moment in the daily routine isn’t particularly a treasured gem for even the most devoted of mothers. Ms. Conaboy’s willingness to go through the huge inconvenience of nursing her baby indicates a maternal instinct, at least on the practical level. She might not be feeling anything because she’s too busy trying to “have it all” at the same time.
