Opponents clash as California aims to force diesel trucks off the road

Environmentalists and trucking industry groups sparred with clean air regulators today over a contentious proposal to phase out California’s big rigs and other trucks with internal combustion engines, and force manufacturers to speed mass-production of electric trucks.

The California Air Resources Board held its first public hearing on rules that would ban manufacturers from selling any new fossil-fueled medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks by 2040. The new rules would also require large trucking companies to convert their fleets to electric models, buying more over time until all are zero-emission by 2042. The move is part of the state’s wider strategy to end its reliance on fossil fuels and cut planet-warming emissions.

“California is leading the transition to wide-scale electrification of trucks and buses,” said board chair Liane Randolph. “These actions can show the world how to simultaneously address the climate crisis, improve air quality and alleviate key concerns identified by communities.”

Sounds dangerous.

Have you ever tried to force an 18 wheel vehicle off the road?

we need a FedGov that prohibits local governments from specifying the type of propulsion fuel a vehicle can use under penalty of losing all Fed highway funding ... the Feds have used this mechanism repeatedly in the past, such as requiring right-on-red turning, so it’s a perfectly legal and legitimate thing to do ...

The end of fossil fuels is the end of food.

Electric trucks...the truck will be a dual tandem with one of the trailers filled with batteries.

I'm old enough to remember when the Watermelons forced the curly-cue mercury CFL bomblets on us - with no plan on how to recycle millions and millions of them.

Now, we have LED bulbs instead.

The Federal Government back in the day allowed California to set its own rules regarding vehicular emissions. The idea was to give California tools to combat smog.

No there will be electric semis. Their touted ranges, however, will not be as advertised. They will in the first batch of ev’s, suffer the same towing issue loss of range as we see in the ev pickup trucks.

There’s a saying; if you have it, a truck brought it. Democrats are spreading hardship all across this country and this NWO criminal puke Kalifornia governor is leading the charge.

The idea was to enhance bureaucratic rule.

LA had problems with air quality that have NOT been solved.

Same with Denver.

Cutting off the water supply would seem to be an easy solution.

EVENTUALLY some Republican will figure out that if a truck picks up a load in Long Beach, and heads straight out of state, then California should have NO RIGHT to regulate them, since they’re not providing crap to California.

But note that I said ‘Republican’, so don’t get your hopes up, at least for another 50 years or so.

At least the technology exists to electrify the railways in California. This is often done for commuter rail systems. I would guess it would work for freight too.

Ah, the magical electric semi. It’ll run hour after hour, hauling 80,000 pounds over mountains in freezing weather. Oh, look, there’s a unicorn!
