UK’s Liz Truss fires Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng in a bid to save her premiership

LONDON — British Prime Minister Liz Truss has fired her finance minister, Kwasi Kwarteng, as she fights to hang on as prime minister after her budget crashed the markets.

Truss will give a press conference later Friday, amid reports of another imminent U-turn on significant parts of her plan to cut taxes. Downing Street announced Jeremy Hunt, who has previously served as health secretary and foreign secretary, would replace Kwarteng as chancellor.

Despite several attempts to calm the markets, including reversing a plan to cut tax for the highest earners and bringing forward a more detailed budget statement, Truss has struggled in the face of sustained economic and political pressure. The decision to call an audience with the press — generally taken in exceptional circumstances — underlines the precariousness of her position little more than a month after she took office.

She seems to be doing a real bang up job.

What happened to the Indian dude that was originally slated to get the position?

The new White Lady Boss is firing the field help.

The EU is a joke and deserves all the pain that is coming.

And it is coming.

I don’t get it.

Biden crushes the U.S. economy and it’s all groovy.

Liz crushes Britain’s economy and there’s a problem somehow?

Crazy, man, crazy. Time to break out the bongos.

“The EU is a joke and deserves all the pain that is coming.”

Not sure if you heard this, but Britain left the EU a few years ago.

Didn’t any of her handlers know before she became Prime Minister that she was going Kwasi?

I had some hope for Truss as the most conservative PM since Thatcher.

Unfortunately while she may be conservative, she is a horrible communicator and not very bright.

She is not a conservative in the sense we might mean it. Years back, I read an article about Europe in general, saying that few real conservatives were in evidence in the political parties all across the EU as it was then, before Brexit.

As we watched the vicious attacks of the AfD in Germany, the EU Commission level anger at Orban in Hungary, and now Meloni in Italy, one sees clearly that the corrupt Left is fully intent on retaining its power by suppressing what cannot be suppressed.

One may expect more of this in the future, as conservative ideas are taking hold in Europe again, albeit slowly.

Not sure many people know that the USSR ended even longer ago than Brexit.

A British pensioner I know is leaving the US, the value of the pound has dropped to where her pension is now worth 20% less in American dollars.

And it is the result of a self-inflicted wound by Boris Johnson and his government. Granted, this was done with the best intentions. But can anyone come up with any way this becomes a positive for the citizens? The war ends, and...?

Oh, sorry - the bond market crashed and your money’s gone.

“Call a general election.”

And get Labor back. No thanks.

If the UK Tories want to save themselves they should get Nigel Farage in as PM. A real conservative and not a moron.

Do you get most of your news from menswear sites?

Good to see you are just as uniformed about the UK a you are about the Ukraine.
