Cook Report shifts Oregon governor’s race toward Republican

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report shifted the Oregon gubernatorial race toward Republicans on Friday, moving it from “lean Democrat” to “toss up.”

Three candidates are vying for the seat of Gov. Kate Brown (D), who is term-limited: former state House Speaker Tina Kotek (D), former state House Minority Leader Christine Drazan (R) and former state Sen. Betsy Johnson (I).

Cook Political Report attributed its ratings change to the fact that Johnson could act as a disruptor in the race given her fundraising advantage and her TV ad spending, leading to tied polling between Kotek and Drazan.

“There’s a clear trend of both Kotek and Drazan pulling in the low 30s, while Johnson has yet to poll higher than the mid-20s, though she has argued that will rise post-Labor Day,” the Cook Political Report notes.

Likely won’t happen, but the race will be far closer than was expected. This is a precursor of the coming Red Wave.

I can just imagine the “Republican” candidate in Oregon is equivalent to a red diaper doper baby in conservatives states.

I could be wrong, but my confidence level is high.

Garbage. Cook does this every time for hits, Wasserman just has to sit there and pretend it’s a viable prediction.

If Johnson wasn’t running any R would beat Kotek.

Looks like its got a 3rd party player pulling in 20%ish of the vote, making this a possibility....

We will see what happens on election day...

This I (third party) is a Democrat State Senator.

I know nothing about Oregon politics, but is this woman running as I some sort of sour grapes thing?

However with her taking up around 20% of the polling it puts the official D and R candidates in a dead heat in the polling.

What’s the back story on this I running? Seems to me the D party would do their best to cajole her to remove herself from the race... yet here she is.

What’s the back story?

Anyone on the ground in Oregon able to speak to this?

“What a pick up this would be “

True, but I think they’re mail-in voting only, so polling doesn’t matter there.

They are trying to scare the Democrat votes to vote for one candidate.

Wrong. But just liberal enough that the Republican purists will run spoiler candidates to torpedo them. Dave Frohnmeyer, for instance.

In Oregon? That’s like getting NYC or Philly to elect a R-politician.

I agree.

That state needs a reformation from the dirt up.

All three west coast states are basked cases, ideologically.

This will be a political earthquake rivalling the Trump victory in 2016. Reporters from England, Japan, Australia, Korea, Turkey, Brazil will be covering this the night of the election. It will be a worldwide event like a solar eclipse.

I think they approved unlimited mail voting meaning no chance a Republican can win. No lead would hold once they start the counting
