“Shut the whole basketball program down.”
NCAA college basketball and football is simply a farm system for the NBA and NFL. The way to restore college athletics is to do the following:
1) End athletic scholarships and special admissions standards for athletes. All students applying to the college should meet the academic standards required for admission. Athletic capability should not be a consideration in college admissions.
2) Return to varsity and junior varsity team sports where any student who is admitted to the college can tryout for a JV team. After a year on the JV team, students athletes, who have the ability, can move up to the varsity team.
3) If games are televised or broadcast on the radio, all income from the games must be put into the general scholarship fund to benefit all students.
4) Any student who joins an athletic team cannot be recruited by a professional team, or accept an offer to play by a professional team, until after graduation.
The NFL and NBA can recruit students who cannot meet college admission standards directly from high school graduates. They can also recruit college athletes who have competed their academic program. In addition, the NFL and NBA can set up their own minor league farm system like major league baseball.
College athletics should put academics first, not professional athletics.
NBA is starting to draft more players from the Euro Leagues, rather than from US colleges.
I would pay money to see what Bobbie Knight’s reaction would have been to some kneeling on his team...
