Electric Car Drivers: Why You Might Not Be Pumped Over Privacy-Jolting Mileage Taxes(DOH!)
realclearinvestigartions.com ^ | 8/2/2022 | Eric Felten

The environmental impact of electric cars may still be unknown, but leaders are growing concerned about the threat they pose to the financing of the nation’s highway system. Because freeways and bridges are funded, in large part, through federal and state taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel, the battery-powered future will test whether roads can just be paved with good intentions.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are trying to devise new ways to raise that fuel tax revenue, which in fiscal year 2020 delivered $35 billion to the federal government and an additional $51 billion to state and local governments. But experts say that proposed fixes to the anticipated highway funding shortfall – involving charging drivers for the miles they travel by tracking their movement – pose a significant threat to personal privacy and liberty.

As if they can't track most newer vehicles anyway. Just add in your little insurance tracker that gets you "lower" rates based on your driving.................. Think the little black box on newer vehicles can't be uh, adjusted? Buy and EV they said. You'll love it they said. You'll help save the planet they said. 🐂💩

Just tax based on miles per year off the odometer, like AAA does for car insurance.

What about The Fourteenth Amendment and equal protection under law? Charging some for road tax and not others....

Another idea being floated is making EV owners charge their vehicles at places that charge for electricity and taxing that, and making the cars compatable only with those charging stations, no more home charging allowed.

Build back better with total surveillance of everybody, and if that doesn't generate enough revenue just "print" (actually just an entry in an electronic ledger) more money.

OK there's a note of sarcasm in my reply, but seriously that is exactly how they are fixing to play it.

If states wish to raise road revenue from EVs, they can start by adding an excise tax on EV charging stations, exactly as they do now with gasoline stations.

Even if you get "free" charging at Tesla Supercharging stations, you would still be charged an excise tax on the number of kilowatts used.

The next step would be a smart meter on a home charging station.

They may need to change home meters anyway so they can count that high. The local power provider installed remote gas and elec meters on most houses here. Using too much gas or electric? Simple rationing until you “do the right thing” on your own.

Ban gasoline and diesel taxes. When you do your annual car registration, the odometer is read. Tax is based on miles driven and vehicle mass. More mass and more miles is more usage and more tax.

The Commie Dems won’t like that....they want MORE control.

A friend got a Suburban & was thinking she would be SOOOO much safer-—because of On Star.

I tried to tell her that On Star was tracking her...She refused to believe it.

I asked her-—IF you call On Star with a problem-—HOW DO YOU THINK THEY KNOWN EXACTLY WHERE YOU ARE TO SEND HELP???

Her DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS LOOK WAS PRICELESS.

No problem: EVs haven't got enough range to worry about milage taxes.

On the serious side, that's why Democrats push for EVs and self-driving cars - easier for the all-controlling government to control private transportation. They don't like us ordinary folks being able to just drive anywhere we want, how far we want, in any direction we want. After all, where in the Constitution does it say we have that right?

Do you actually believe it's about "climate change"?

SOOOO—Are the DMV locations nationwide going to believe your numbers on the registration paperwork??? OR will everyone have to TAKE their vehicles to DMV for a reading???

Probably simultaneous, tax on charging facilities and a dedicated home usage meter. Plenty of new IRS agents to make sure the meters are installed.

Or, for those who don’t want the gubmint tracking their mileage and where they are driving using GPS (that’s next), a flat yearly fee (based on some reasonable estimate) and let the taxpayer choose whichever they want to pay.

This issue has been totally absent from the high gas price discussions. Every state in the union is working feverishly for a pay by the mile system since they embraced the UN’s Agenda 21 now the 2030 plan.

We’ll be like Singapore soon, every motorized vehicle will have a transponder data tracking device counting every revolution of the wheel.

Another little gem in the UN’s & the WEF’s plan, (that is never discussed especially during the summer months), is the total elimination of air conditioning for businesses and homes.

They won’t be satisfied until ALL movements by all vehicles are tracked by a Central Computer which will know everywhere you go and keep a record of it for eternity. It will send you a tax bill based on your mileage and your income. The “poor” will not get a tax bill, and will get free electricity when they fill up.

The government will have the ability to send your car on a detour, send it directly to the police station, pull it over to the curb or to stop it dead in its tracks.

Develop vehicles that defy gravity by magnetism and we could eliminate a large portion of infrastructure maintenance. Smoother rides. Bye bye Firestone and Flintstone.
