WASHINGTON (AP) — The monarch butterfly fluttered a step closer to extinction Thursday, as scientists put the iconic orange-and-black insect on the endangered list because of its fast dwindling numbers.

“It’s just a devastating decline,” said Stuart Pimm, an ecologist at Duke University who was not involved in the new listing. “This is one of the most recognizable butterflies in the world.”

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature added the migrating monarch butterfly for the first time to its “red list” of threatened species and categorized it as “endangered” — two steps from extinct.

Perhaps they can just spend the summer in Oregon or Washington instead of southern Mexico if the climate has gotten too hot

Also lots of milkweed plants.

Their base in Mexico is being logged. A big protected area was sprayed a few years back by loggers who wanted them out so they could go in.

Emma Pelton of the nonprofit Xerces Society, which monitors the western butterflies, said the butterflies are imperiled by loss of habitat and increased use of herbicides and pesticides for agriculture, as well as climate change.

The only solution. Get rid of traditional farming and move to indoor grown/cultured foodstuff & get everyone to move from rural areas to the cities so that flyover country can go back to wilderness.

Well, then they should take it off the list right now!

It's the lack of milkweed plants that affect the population of Monarchs.

My wife has planted a few milkweed plants the last two years and we have seen a few. But mostly bumblebees.

I keep 5 acres in milkweed for them. I had thoughts of joining the Monarch conservancy group but it was just too much BS. All you gotta do is not cut the milkweed so I didn’t and let it grow up.

We are not on the main flyway though. When I was growing up we were and they were thick in the pecan grove down by the creek.

What a shame for everyone they are in such trouble.

The "as well as climate change" is BS. Its a Pavlovian response that any "scientist" adds to any "analysis" of any change in nature. An asteroid could hit the earth and it would be due to climate change.

The real reason the Monarch Butterfly is going extinct is because of the first part of her answer - development and herbicides.

Back in 2016 they were devastated by an ice storm in Mexico, they’re still recovering. Heat isn’t there issue.
