Of course, the real reason is probably that Erdogan did not want Turkey used as a target base for this conflict tween Iran and Israel. He says; “Leave Turkey out of this. I don’t want Israel assuming we (Turkey) are ready allies of Iran.

Erdogan said and did nothing for quite a while, then Israel pantsed him and Turkey in front of the rest of the world, and that rattled the chains he's locked himself into.
Turkey and Israel have a history of cooperation in military affairs. Lots of Turkey’s military equipment especially its air force has lots of Israeli upgrades.
If Turkey attacked Iran from the rear, would Greece help?

Not to make light of the current episode, but Jews and Israelis have been killed in Istanbul for centuries. And not just by the religion of pieces.
