I disagree. The victim seemed to be aware of the two thugs following closely, but I would conjecture that he didn’t want to come off as racist so he kinda aimlessly kept walking.

Yes. And having some kind of offensive gear to get perps to back off. As a senior, I always have something at the ready. I'm sitting in a mall waiting for my wife to come out of a clothing store. I spy a black thug with a hoodie sneaking towards me, and calmly pull a knife and rest it on my leg. Thug backs off and disappears. I'm not going down without a fight to maim them.
They were engaging him at the start of video. I will guess they wanted money, and threatened him, but didn't show a weapon. The hoodies and especially masks also tell me they were in the mugging business - few young black thugs are actually concerned about covid.
That's the problem with living in NY City. One's situational awareness alarms are going off all the time.
