Children don’t buy comics. Transgender was quite literally done thirty years ago in an X-Men spin off title called Alpha Flight. They were kinda the Canadian Avengers. One of the original characters, Sasquatch (Walter), a scientist and former football player, died and came back as a woman and used the name Wanda. His teammate girlfriend rejected his new female body. Eventually he became Walter again but I don’t remember that story.

The series is famous for the first out gay Marvel Superhero, Northstar. He was always meant to be gay per his creator but wasn’t officially out until the early nineties. He was also supposed to have contracted HIV/AIDS but the editors were too afraid to go there so he had a unspecified illness.

His twin sister was Walter/Wanda’s girlfriend.
