Bank of England Governor Warns of ‘Apocalyptic’ Food Shortages From Fallout of Russia-Ukraine War

Russia’s war on Ukraine is leading to an “apocalyptic” food shortage, Governor of the Bank of England Andrew Bailey told a committee of Parliament on Monday. Bailey said the main issue is that major global grain supplier Ukraine’s crops cannot be exported due to the war. The head of the United Nations World Food Program warned “millions of people around the world will die” if Ukraine’s Black Sea ports continue to be blockaded by Russia. Last week, Italian League party leader Matteo Salvini warned the looming food shortages due to the war could cause as many as 20 million people from Africa to migrate to Europe.

And Mr. Taylor should do more research. Ukraine wheat is presently being shipped out of Black Sea through Romanian ports. Said ports are now enlarging capacity, and clearing out old railroads to allow rail cargo throughout Europe. Increased activity now underway to meet next wheat harvest. War, not scarcity, is the mother of invention.

Brandon throttled our petroleum industry. Petroleum and natural gas are used in the production of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer. Prices of all these chemicals will be higher, much higher.

Russia and Ukraine account for 33% of the world's total wheat exports. The US can't make up the difference. Moreover, the skyrocketing costs of fertilizer and energy will drive wheat prices thru the roof. Hungary and Argentina have stopped the export of wheat from their countries to taske care of their people first. Expect other countries to follow suit.

Wheat exports from Ukraine will be reduced regardless. And Russia will find new customers because of the sanctions. The price of wheat will go up exponentially. How many African customers will be able to afford the price?
