Putin now faces only different kinds of defeat
BBC ^ | 8th May 2022 | Michael Clatke

This war is one that Russia cannot win in any meaningful sense.

Putin's foreign military successes around the world after 2008 were all achieved by using small units of elite forces, mercenaries and local militia groups alongside Russian air power.

This gave Moscow considerable leverage at low cost during interventions in Georgia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Syria, Libya, Mali and twice in Ukraine during 2014, first in illegally annexing Crimea and then in creating self-declared Russian statelets in Luhansk and Donetsk.

In every case, Russia moved swiftly and ruthlessly in ways the western world was unable to counter except through graduated sanctions regimes - nothing that could reverse the reality. Putin was adept at creating "new facts on the ground".

In February he tried the same again on the grandest possible scale in Ukraine - to grab governmental power within about 72 hours in a country of 45 million people occupying the second biggest land area in Europe. It was an astonishing and reckless gamble and it failed completely in the first crucial week.

...Having failed with Plan A to seize the government in Kyiv before President Zelensky's forces, or the outside world, could react, Moscow then switched to a Plan B. This was a more "manoeuvrist" military approach to surround Kyiv and move in on other Ukrainian cities - Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Mariupol and Mykolaiv and simply snuff out Ukrainian armed resistance while Kyiv itself would be threatened with capitulation or destruction.

This, too, failed.

...In frustration, Russia has now moved to "plan C",

In every case, Russia moved swiftly and ruthlessly in ways the western world was unable to counter except through graduated sanctions regimes...

Putin knew that he had weak leaders in the U.S., and when the U.S. is weak, leaders around the world follow the weakness and allow bad things to happen. That was the case with Obama and that is the case again with Biden as Obama 2.0.

Putin is like any other leader who knows how to take advantage of weakness, and that is the case with just about any democrat president in Washington. Now, even N. Koraa and Iran and others are taking advantage of the weak leadership in Washington and other western nations.

Putin and Russia (as the former Soviet Union) did not dare take on any big adventures when Reagan and Trump were president. When analyzing victories, small or large, one has to look at who is the opposition. Certainly, Obama and Biden are no opposition, and in reality, they encouraged the aggression.

As Putin was smart enough, he's really going to look like a genius when the Russians overcome all these alleged problems.

Any believing the Biden regime or the Ukrainians is a fool. It's going to be fun when this all over and you realize you've been lied to about this war.

Gee, fancy that, the Biden regime is lying!

I would not be surprised to see Russia seek to broaden its
holdings on the Eastern side of the Ukraine.

There is a top to bottom oil reserves under that region
just to the west of land Russia has already occupied.

It having taken the AZOV preserve region, it stands to
reason increasing it’s oil preserves might be attractive
also.

What may prevent that, is that it would then have to hold on
to it. It may already have its hands full hanging on to what
it has already absconded with.

Think how may people would still be alive living their
lives in the Ukraine if only Russia had kept its
troops in Russia away from the Ukraine border.

All this death and destruction, it’s such a waste.

The Russian people are now being forced to mourn their
own sons. For what?

Well, Putin made a name for himself. I’d hate to think
that name isn’t big enough already, and people from more
nations will be sucked into this black hole.

Russia will control of all of Donbass and, likely, all of the coastline by the time this is finished. That was the objective.

I certainly rooting for a land bridge from Crimea all the way to Transnistria. If The Russians control the Black Sea, we won't be able to stick our noses into a part of the world we have absolutely no national interest in. The only losers will be our corrupt political class that will lose Ukraine as way to fatten their bank accounts.

Glad you're "rooting" for people to be subjugated and end up with Putin's boot on their neck, Yeah!

I am about fed up with these “journalists” who espouse their views. Most of them run their mouths and it becomes clear that most are clueless. The way most of these infantile scribes think, if it doesn’t all happen in a 24 hour news cycle, it didn’t happen at all. I feel bad for the Ukranaian people, but I really hope lots of “journalists” get a very “liberal” dose of poo on their faces.

I asked myself—What would I do if I was Putin?
1. I wouldn’t have invaded Ukraine like he did—but that’s water under the bridge—starting from this point what would I do?
A. You need a second front to take off pressure. Use a client state. Like Iran to shut off oil supply. Sink a few tankers or a few USN ships or gunboats.
B. Have an “accident” and close the Suez Canal. Jam or sink a ship in the thing. This would drive up oil prices.
C. Close the Panama Canal—once again a ship could wreck a loch or cause a temporary problem.
D. Set up an air/Sea Base in Cuba —SEnd the North Sea fleet on a “state visit” to Cuba. Just two subs could cause US jitters.
E. Crash the International Space station into the USA.
F. Use Iran’s Terror connections to blow up an American Landmark—statue of Liberty comes to mind or Mr. Rushmore.
G. Print up copies of American Money—counterfeits so good they will pass and flood the world with them.
H. Help out North Korea with their nuke/rocket program to threaten Guam and Okinawa.
I. Form an Axis of Friendship and co-operation with a list of nations. Your own NATO. Include Africa and Asia and South America.
