Biden plugs manufacturing initiative at Ohio metal company

HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) β€” President Joe Biden traveled to the industrial Midwest on Friday to announce that five major U.S. manufacturers have made commitments to boost their reliance on small and medium American firms for 3D printing.

β€œIt’s going to revolutionize the whole world,” Biden said during the tour.

3D printing is not for high production parts. Right now it’s more for rapid parts prototyping. Maybe if combined with cintered metals you could produce a useful metal part with limited finish machining & grinding. By itself this technology actually facilitates outsourcing.

I wouldn't rely on 3D printing for a mission critical part. I might use it to repair a teapot or a toy doll. Structural parts, not on my life.
