3D printing is not for high production parts. Right now it’s more for rapid parts prototyping. Maybe if combined with cintered metals you could produce a useful metal part with limited finish machining & grinding. By itself this technology actually facilitates outsourcing.

I wouldn't rely on 3D printing for a mission critical part. I might use it to repair a teapot or a toy doll. Structural parts, not on my life.
