Germany has said it will stop importing oil from Russia by the end of the year.
"We will halve oil by the summer and will be at zero by the end of the year, and then gas will follow," said German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
Germany currently buys a quarter of its oil and 40% of its gas from Russia and has warned that it could face a recession if supplies suddenly stopped.
The US has already banned Russian oil imports, while the UK plans to phase them out by the end of the year.
The EU has said it will switch to alternative supplies and make Europe independent from Russian energy "well before 2030".
Ms Baerbock said it would follow a "European roadmap" in phasing out oil and gas imports.
"Our joint exit, the complete exit of the European Union, is our common strength," she added.
Germany has already halted the opening of a big Russian gas pipeline, Nord Stream 2, in response to the war.

LOL!
This round to Putin.
Lol.
Gonna be a mighty cold German winter
Maybe they shouldn’t have listened to the Greenies
I wonder what Germany means by getting oil from "alternate supplies". Maybe they'll go back to drilling their own oil like evil climate haters. LOL
Yeah. Germany’s move to solar and wind has proven to be so successful. /s
Germany should have learned to stop fearing nuclear.
Also, that'll be 120 bucks for the fill-up, sir.
I hope the German Chancellor provides the volk with proper clothing this Winter. Unlike the last time they got into it with the Russians.
German scientists have a miracle weapon that extracts oil from solar wind turbines powered by hamsters.
Oil?? What about natural gas?? Does anyone know how much oil vs natural gas the Germans are importing from Russia?
> This round to Putin. <
Yes, indeed. The statement “Germany to stop Russian oil imports by end of this year” can be translated to “We will quietly keep on buying Russian oil and hope no one notices.”
Gotta love that parsed language the lib media uses.
What’s wrong with right now Germany ?
$120 per fill-up is where they are now.
Agreed. IMHO nuclear is great for energy -- at least if we're talking about energy supplied by the government or a government regulated monopoly (like most utilities unfortunately have to be done, even though I like free markets).
But if you're in a good situation for it, I like solar from a decentralized perspective. My solar power isn't nearly as efficient or dependable as fossil energy or nuclear energy. But the fact of the matter is that I manage my solar system for our needs instead of hoping selfish idiot bureaucrats make the right decisions for our energy needs. If I could drill my own natural gas I would, but I can't. Solar is the best energy source I can bring to the table for my family to reduce some of our dependency on gubment.
Since I installed solar 11 months ago it's supplied 57% of all the power we consumed in our two-story all-electric house. At least that part of my budget isn't experiencing sky high inflation rates from Dims making energy too expensive to force us to repent from our cow farting ways.
Germany does not need to import Russian oil into Germany. It really doesn’t need their natural gas. They can go green by relocating their factories to China because after all carbon dioxide from China does not contribute to “climate change”. It’s science.
How about solar not for direct use, but indirectly to synthesize fuels that can be used when and where you need them?
I question whether Germany really can ween themselves off of Russian oil and gas as quickly as they are claiming. Its obviously the right step...they were idiots to make themselves so dependent in the first place.
They should build LNG terminals and recommission nuclear power plants and mine their own coal again. In other words they should take practically everything they’ve done in the last 20 years and slam it into reverse as fast as possible. Will they? So far they haven’t shown they are willing to stop sacrificing to Gaia.
