"1883" actor Sam Elliott apologized Sunday for comments he made about Jane Campion's acclaimed Western film "The Power of the Dog," saying at a promotional event that he "wasn't very articulate about it."
"I said some things that hurt people and I feel terrible about that," Elliott said in part at a Deadline panel event about the Paramount+ drama series "1883."
In an interview on Marc Maron's podcast "WTF" that aired last month, Elliott blasted Campion's film, calling it a "piece of s---" and decrying what he characterized as "allusions to homosexuality throughout the f------ movie."
He also questioned what a filmmaker from New Zealand would know about the American West, saying that the decision to shoot the film in that country "rubbed me the wrong way."
"The Power of the Dog" stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a closeted rancher in 1920s Montana. The film led the pack of contenders for the 94th Academy Awards, with 12 nods. Campion won the best director Oscar, making her only the third woman to earn that prize.
Elliott on Sunday publicly apologized to Campion, Cumberbatch and the gay community.
“I want to apologize to the cast of ‘The Power of the Dog,’ brilliant actors all, and in particular Benedict Cumberbatch,” Elliott said. “I can only say that I’m sorry and I am. I am.”

Powers Boothe where are you.
Oh Sam, never apologize to these people. That only emboldens them.
I wasn’t familiar with “1883,” sounds very good. Sam lives (assume he still does) in Oregon’s Willamette valley.
Before the Oregon Trail was Lewis and Clarke. I’m reading a book published in 1916 that covers the Diary/Journal of Sergeant Ordway of the Corp of Discovery. If you haven’t read the Journal of Lewis and Clarke expedition....you should, you’ll love it.
I didn’t pay to watch it, but I watched it and it’s a weird movie. Wish I had my 90 minutes back.
Same, I watched too see what all the hype was about & I wasn’t hyped.
Got negative vibes from it..
Never apologize for your opinions, EVER!
Crap, given the drama and incidents that occurred during the series, I am surprised the wagon train made 50 miles.
still screwed, but at least he dint disavow it...
Sounds like it’s condemning the cycle of grooming manufacturing gays. But, given the praise it’s getting from the left, probably not the intention.
Screw the Biden Supporting, traitor to America Sam Elliot! Why do those on the right still support and defend this TRAITOR and promote his Hollyweird crap???
A very good nutshell!
I haven’t seen the movie....don’t want to......and your concise word picture tells me everything I might want to know.
“...Cummerbund is married with children...”
I know! I was sure this guy was gay as a goose, I did sincerely apologize to him in my mind for that!
He’s from a rather prominent British family, as I learned from Wikipedia when I looked him up for whatever reason and also found out he’s a hetero.
Sergio Leone movies were entertaining. But they were about as connected to the American west as Star Wars was. Anyone with even a passing knowledge of the west rolls their eyes at his films.
Like I said, entertaining, but the most anyone could say about them is “inspired by the American west”
Agreed. Weird. And manipulative.
The homo ‘subplot’ was obviously the main plot and the screenplay’s MO.
Well, not long ago, he was talking about experimenting with boys in school. I just typed cumberbatch experimenting and it’s from 2014, but I’m not clicking the links.
Never. Apologize.
It’s all downhill hill for Sam now. He’ll be doing gay porn before you know it.
The film has a lot of homosexual references but doesn’t really portray homosexuals in a very positive light.
The main thing is that Power of the Dog is NOT a Western. It is set in the old west, but it does not follow the genre formula at all. I’d call it a cowboy drama with a lot of attention on sexuality.
The title of the film comes from the Bible in Psalm 22:20 which contains a prayer to “save me… from the power of the dog.” Homosexuals are sometimes called dogs in the Bible. I’m not sure if that is its meaning in this passage. But the movie actually cites this verse.
