"1883" actor Sam Elliott apologized Sunday for comments he made about Jane Campion's acclaimed Western film "The Power of the Dog," saying at a promotional event that he "wasn't very articulate about it."
"I said some things that hurt people and I feel terrible about that," Elliott said in part at a Deadline panel event about the Paramount+ drama series "1883."
In an interview on Marc Maron's podcast "WTF" that aired last month, Elliott blasted Campion's film, calling it a "piece of s---" and decrying what he characterized as "allusions to homosexuality throughout the f------ movie."
He also questioned what a filmmaker from New Zealand would know about the American West, saying that the decision to shoot the film in that country "rubbed me the wrong way."
"The Power of the Dog" stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a closeted rancher in 1920s Montana. The film led the pack of contenders for the 94th Academy Awards, with 12 nods. Campion won the best director Oscar, making her only the third woman to earn that prize.
Elliott on Sunday publicly apologized to Campion, Cumberbatch and the gay community.
“I want to apologize to the cast of ‘The Power of the Dog,’ brilliant actors all, and in particular Benedict Cumberbatch,” Elliott said. “I can only say that I’m sorry and I am. I am.”

And he will have to live with that for the rest of his days, however long that might be.
“ Ahem, hey Sam, ever hear of Sergio Leone ? An Italian, He was known to have created some legendary Westerns, so there is that. ”
Spaghetti westerns - my favorite 🤪
They even got to Sam. Sigh.
My wife snd mother-in-law watched the dog movie. I asked, “I don’t really care, so what was it about?”
They said they “didn’t know, but it seemed serious and good except for the guy might have been gay or queer about a boy and he killed him”.
I said,” Like a groomer that got rejected? Who gets killed?”
“we don’t really know, but it was interesting “.
Sounds pretty much awful to me, sez i.
Yep.
How does one take back calling something a piece
“Oh, I’m sorry if i called that a piece of s—-. Did i say that out loud?”
It’s a film about a guy who was groomed when he was a kid and how he tried to groomed kid and the kid ends up killing him.
I heard that if you’re in to westerns you don’t want to see it.
I didn't get "1883." My German ancestors came west on the Oregon Trail in 1867. Not many more wagon trains came after them. By 1883, most people coming west were riding on real trains.
It’s one of those movies where you wait for something to happen…and it never does.
I thought that the same thing and looked it up. There were documented wagon trains until around 1890 but the vast majority of people traveled west on the railroad by then.
Apologizing to globohomo makes you a globohomo also.
Lol
Grovel to the Sodomarchy, Sam !
Saw him on an old Hawaii Five 0. Didn’t recognize him but did recognize the voice. He was pretty good looking.
Hollyweird loves to deify beta male cucks. Cucumberpatch is definitely of that breed.
Biden supporter. Enough said.
It sounds like a prequel to “Brokeback Mountain”, the main characters weren’t eating pudding perchance?
