Russia in Broad Retreat From Kyiv, Seeking to Regroup From Battering

BUCHA, Ukraine — The Russian forces that were intent on overwhelming Kyiv at the war’s start with tanks and artillery retreated under fire across a broad front on Saturday, leaving behind them dead soldiers and burned vehicles, according to witnesses, Ukrainian officials, satellite images and military analysts.

The withdrawal suggested the possibility of a major turn in the six-week war — the collapse, at least for now, of Russia’s initial attempt to seize Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, and the end of its hopes for the quick subjugation of the nation.

Moscow has described the withdrawal as a tactical move to regroup and reposition its forces for a major push in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. While there are early indications that the military is following through on that plan, analysts say it cannot obscure the magnitude of the defeat.

“The initial Russian operation was a failure and one of its central goals — the capture of Kyiv — proved unobtainable for Russian forces,” Michael Kofman, the director of Russian studies at C.N.A., a research institute in Arlington, Va., said in a telephone interview Saturday.

Or Russia achieved it’s goals in the east and has moved to fortify it.

More like moved on to take care of business elsewhere. More BS propaganda. Big indicator: If it comes from a left wing/globalist source it has a 99.5% chance of being an outright lie or modified/exaggerated to meet the narrative. Information warfare is a technique that has developed over the years and more highly used today than ever before.

The media makes no attempt to analyze the situation or inform its readers.

maybe the most obvious answer is correct - Russia is simply getting beaten, badly

by a much smaller country ... no wonder they don’t want to talk about it

Kind of like the Winter War where the Soviets got their @$$es beat by the Finns. Or the Russo-Japanese War by the emerging power Japan.

What goals are those? In the two weeks they have been battering Kiev they have also failed to gain any ground in the east.

Quite possibly true, but I find it hard to believe that the ‘special operation’ has gone according to plans.

Hardly! My great grandfather fought in the Russo Japanese War and my family has been heavily involved in the military/defense through decades including myself. What is going on here is pure propaganda and disinformation. My colleagues from the intel side of the house know exactly what is going on and most of what you all are citing and referencing is very off. They call it highly exaggerated.

I don’t believe a think printed in the NY Slimes. However, I have always thought the Russian/Soviet military capabilities have been over-hyped to bolster the US military-industrial complex. Scare Americans into spending money on outrageously priced military hardware. I’m a peace through strength guy, but I am frugal.

At this point Russia will do well to hang onto what it took in 2014.

If the Kerch Strait Bridge including the rail line is disrupted, Ukraine may take the Crimea.

That means Russia loses the naval base at Sevastopol.

They had hoped to take Kiev. It’s clear that it’s not going to happen.

The more important goal though is to secure the land bridge from Crimea to Russia proper. No doubt the Russian Kiev units will regroup and join the fight in the southeast.

They had hoped I believe to take the southwest and integrate Transniestria into Russia, but I don’t see that happening. My view is that they will harass Odessa to keep those Ukrainian units tied down, to keep them from redeploying east.

Ukraine’s challenge is to take back the territory they have lost before their western backers force them into ceding that area. Russia needs to hold them in order to be able to claim victory.

The retreat from Kiev may mean the war actually heats up. When Mariupol falls the Russians will have won their minimum objective. My fear is the west may try to force Ukraine to stand down at that point.

You are living in lala land. Stop believing the propaganda. It amazes me after all the lies we have been fed the last 5 years, some people still believe exactly what the liars want them to believe. It’s scary actually.

Obviously Kyiv is out. What's left is to try to take territory east of Dnieper River as much as possible.

About two weeks ago someone here posted that Kiev would fall in 48 to 72 hours. Anyone know who that was?
