Some observers have questioned the adoption by the BBC of the spelling Kyiv for the capital of Ukraine instead of Kiev, as Britons and Americans have traditionally referred to it.
Many presenters are also using the accompanying pronunciation 'KEE-eve' rather than the previous 'KEE-yev', leaving some listeners confused.

КИЕВ is the Ukrainian spelling I think. I spent a very nice month 15 years ago in Simferopol, Yalta and Kyiv. Putin is swine.
And, it’s BOMBAY!
Not mumble mumble mumbai!
Correction: КИIB. It was a long time ago. I still got the T shirt somewhere. Oh, before Democrats f*cked this up.
It’s pronounced something like “Kee’-juh”.
They use a non-Latin alphabet.
So is it Chicken Kiev or Chicken Kyiv?

So awhile back I was looking at a map of Europe, printed in English. And in the middle of Austria was a city labeled Wien. It took me a moment to realize that this was Vienna. If a map is in English, or if a discussion is in English, it would seem to me that that geographical names should be in English.
How this relates to Kiev, I’m not sure.
I really don’t think the people in those places gave a shiite how we pronounced their words, any more than we care how they pronounce our’s.
It was solely a preoccupation of the naval gazers in the west.
FWIW, my great grandparents emigrated from Kiev in the 1880s — it was part of Russia (they renounced their loyalty to “the Emperor of Russia” in their US citizenship papers) — and pronounced their birthplace k’YEV.
Tim Russert inadvertently swapped the colors once and it stuck. I heard that from someone on a radio/podcast show long ago. I can’t remember the details now but that’s what was said to have happened. We were the blue. Red fits them better.
Depends on what happens. If you go over there and you don’t pronounce their place right you’re rude. And really when they’re on the news all over. It’s a matter of respect. And intellect. If you found out some country’s new channels pronounced it Warshinteen DC every election what would you think of them.
It’s not solely a preoccupation of the naval gazers in the west. Most places actually put a little work into pronouncing other places correctly. It’s a bad side of effect of the British Empire that we took this “screw it” attitude.
2000 election. It used to be that blue states were ones that went to the incumbent (or their party), and red to the opposition. Then the 2000 mess happened and red and blue became party oriented.
It’s a liberal egghead ploy to make them seem to be smarter than you.
The key is to never use the name for a city. Use terms like:
“the Capital of China”
or
“the city that originated the dish Peking Duck”
They can’t spell “color” or pronounce “aluminum”, so what do you expect?
Be that as it may. I’ve traveled a bit and it never came up.
Peking is the the Cantonese say Beijing. Local dialects in China are numerous.
Just because they didn’t say anything doesn’t mean they didn’t think you were an ass.
Really, why shouldn’t we have enough basic respect for people to call their cities the right name? That’s all it is. Basic, human, respect. If you can’t muster that up don’t blame others cause they can.
Lol. Thanks for showing me how not to be an ass.
