ABA Forcing Wokeness on Law Schools

Legal education is about to undergo a revolutionary change, with the American Bar Association poised to mandate race-focused study as a prerequisite to graduating from law school. ... This race-focused educational mandate is being forced on law schools through the American Bar Association’s Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar (ABA).

Much of ABA’s power stems from the federal government. Law students must attend schools whose accreditor is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to receive federal student loans. The ABA is the only federally recognized law school accreditor.

Yet, ABA’s accreditation power doesn’t depend only on federal law. Graduating from a law school accredited by ABA is required in almost every state for applicants seeking admission to the bar. All 50 states recognize ABA accreditation. With only a small number of exceptions, most accept only ABA accreditation.

Why governments gave the ABA near-monopoly power is disputed. Some say the purpose was to guarantee quality legal training. Others argue that, like any guild, the ABA’s primary motivation was to limit competition.

Whether or not ABA accreditation previously ensured quality, the ABA has become partisan, using its power to promote an ideological agenda.

The liberal bias of the ABA itself is not new. A study of ABA evaluations of judicial nominees from 1977-2008 found “strong evidence of systematic bias in favor of Democratic nominees,” who were likelier to be rated “well-qualified” than similarly qualified Republicans. Republicans have long recognized this. That’s why President George W. Bush discontinued ABA pre-screening of judicial nominees. Most Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans now treat the ABA merely as an advocacy group.

...

The most important action that states can take is to stop requiring bar applicants to graduate from an ABA-accredited school.

Excellent article. It's time to stop fighting the leftist descent of the ABA and start simply disentangling their tentacles from our institutions. Advocate for this in your State!

“ABA merely as an advocacy group”

The ABA is an anti-white hate group.

Shouldn't be a problem, the ABA is just acting as a "community organizer".

Law schools can do an excellent job of teaching critical thinking skills, but the legal profession continues to be filled with a disproportionate number of young flaming liberals who are typically short on real life experience.

We need to call this what it is - this isn’t “wokeness”

This is communism.

Plenty of non-ABA accredited law schools in California. (Ironic, huh?)

In California, there are more than 40 law schools that are not accredited by the ABA, but whose graduates are certified and permitted to sit for the California Bar Examination.

Nineteen states permit California non-ABA law graduates to sit for their state bar examination if the graduate has passed the California bar examination and has practiced for a certain number of years. These states are Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

The ABA is an ignominius bloviated gasbag of an organization whose shallow minded members use their affiliation to burnish wholly lackluster and mediocre resumes. It’s of no redeeming value whatsoever.

Instead of coddling young lefties, give them a one way ticket to their choice of Venezuela, Cuba, Zimbabwe or North Korea and send them there for one full year (365 or 366 days in case of a leap year) and don’t allow them any luxeries. In fact, anyone caught singing the praises of communism should receive this treatment. Then we’ll see if they still believe it.

I’ve been licensed for over 36 years. Never been a member of the ABA because of its insistence in lending its imprimatur to left-wing political causes.

Law schools can do an excellent job of teaching critical thinking skills

_____________________________________
But they suck at teaching baby lawyers how to run a practice. Basically because the vast majority of full-time law faculty have never had to hang out a shingle and make a living in the real world of law practice. Law school is the quintessential ivory tower environment.

My observation of Law Schools is the one thing that should be made clear to all students is that they will be money trees either self employed or working for Law Firms. Staff gets paid before their bosses. Govt contracts and contacts are the mainstay of many firms but not available for smaller practices. Clients provide money to keep a practice in business. There is a constant effort to bring in new clients. Of course, government employment is the goal of many students. You start at a higher level and get a steady pay check along with generous perks. Three day weekends 11 or 12 months of the year. A law degree is an employment resume enhancement for many jobs even for mediocre graduates. Good lawyers are absolutely needed for our society and hence those deciding on that profession benefit from knowing what will be expected of them and the pressure they will experience when business slows down now and then.
