Grantees will be part of the police department camera registry

King City police rolling out a new crime-fighting program that gives residents $200 to buy and install outdoor security cameras.

“We're confident this should pique some interest in the community as a city it's our attempt to partner with the community and work in collaboration to try and solve the crimes and make the community safer,” said King City police captain, James Hunt.

Advertisement Police say security cameras are key in not only preventing home burglaries but helping to solve crimes as well. Video from such cameras helped identify suspects and getaway vehicles in two recent shootings that left three people dead. Police hoping neighbors will take advantage of the cash for cameras offer.

“Security cameras in the area be it city cameras or privately owned cameras oftentimes catch a crucial piece of evidence, maybe a person walking in the neighborhood a vehicle leaving the area, gives actual intelligence and lots of times we're able to turn that into a lead,” said Hunt.

To qualify for the $200 incentive your camera will have to be registered with the King City police department, it has to have storage capabilities, the footage must be made available for investigators upon request, and only outdoor cameras qualify and one camera has to point to the street.

“I think that's awesome and I would recommend everybody to do it if they're going to help finance it why not, not only will it help the community but it will protect your property as well,” said Justin Stilwell of King City.

Residents can apply for the program online or at the King City police department. To apply click on this link: Security Camera Grant Application

Why? Just because “Anything your camera records, can and may be used against you in a court of law.”

Sounds similar to the power company offering free wifi controlled thermostats, so that they can control your temperature settings.

Probably because it will significantly cut down crime and related costs

Point it at that neighbor you are ticked at.

So they hint that the cameras are a good thing, then they incentify the cameras and hope that people will do it in the name of a ‘good thing”. Next they will try to make it alaw that every home have an outdoor security camera...in the name of it being a ‘good thing”. Next they will try to suggest that all houses have indoor cameras...and so on...

I cannot see this as ultimately leading to being a ‘good thing”!

If my house was robbed I think I’d be pretty happy if the cops could obtain video from the neighborhood that could identify the perps.

But on FR, all technology is bad.

How about giving 200 to the purchase of an 870.

Technology isn’t bad. It’s the inevitable creep toward twisted misuse by those in positions of authority.

No technology is not “bad”...but lots of people who use technology are evil! FReepers in the main know this aspect to be true. You demean the rest of us with that stupid comment! Most FREEPERS can still count to two, chew gum and understand our constitutions and love Jesus at the same time!

Cut out the middle man and have LE set up their own cameras fed into the police station’s basement.

” Next they will try to make it alaw that every home have an outdoor security camera”

Watch for insurance policies to offer discounts if you have govt connected cameras outside. Same as charging people who don’t, extra each year.

My Kimber 1911 .45cal “Eclipse Target II” has no eyes, but my upgraded 1999 inside security system works just fine.

I’ve got something better: a 95 pound Rotten Shepherd (she’s more Rottweiler than German Shepherd) that comes to life in a big way whenever strangers come within 50 feet of our house.
