Two thousand flights have been canceled Christmas Eve in relation to the omicron variant, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware.
As President Biden promised to “shut down the virus” during the 2020 presidential campaign, nearly a year later omicron is impacting airlines’ ability to transport Christmas travelers in a timely fashion.
FlightAware shows about 1,175 flights have already been canceled for Saturday, Christmas Day.
United Airlines told the Wall Street Journal that flight crews and operational employees are in short supply due to omicron exposure.
“The nationwide spike in Omicron cases this week has had a direct impact on our flight crews and the people who run our operation,” United Airlines told the Journal.
Delta Air Lines revealed to the publication they are canceling flights because of “bad weather in some areas,” along with the omicron variant.

What Laboratories Should Know:
There are no authorized, cleared, or approved diagnostic tests to specifically detect SARS-CoV-2 variants (Omicron or other variants). Currently, COVID-19 tests are designed and authorized to check broadly for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, not for specific variants.
The Omicron variant has a deletion in the spike (S) gene (Δ69-70). Some molecular tests with multiple genetic targets include a target covering the portion of the S gene where the deletion occurs. The presence of this mutation can result in an S-gene target failure (SGTF, also referred to as an S-gene drop out). The S-gene target will fail (return as negative) while other targets are expected to remain positive in the presence of this virus. SGTF can signal the need for sequencing to characterize the variant in a specimen.
SGTF has been observed in other variants and thus is not specific to the Omicron variant.

Just curious, are these legitimate cancellations or are the pilots protesting vac mandates? Remember South West had this happen and to this day lie and blame the weather.
Hopefully, these airlines are offering free refunds for their own staff shortages.

And cancellations are because the airlines required vaccines of their workers. Now have less workers. This is all on them.
Certain areas of the country are testing like crazy. Example: CLE has testing stations set up before the gate!!!
