CDC orders airlines to name passengers returning from southern Africa

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is ordering airlines to turn over the names of passengers who have recently been in any of eight southern African countries where the COVID-19 Omicron variant is known to be spreading.

The CDC issued the directive to airlines late Tuesday, according to Reuters, which obtained a copy of the order.

It requires all airlines to collect and turn over names and contact information for all travelers who have been to Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa or Zimbabwe in the past 14 days.

The letter from the CDC cited “the emergence of the Omicron variant of the virus that causes COVID-19” as a reason for the order.

This can lead to people cancelling flights and then airlines cancelling flights which can become a real PIA for anyone trying to return to the states for the holidays.

One of our relatives has a daughter/husband and 2 grand kids in one of the supposedly in danger countries.

They have bought tickets to return for the holidays in about a week.

They were warned that if the airlines start cancelling flights due to banned passengers, they might not get home for the holidays.

They don’t. But in case you haven’t noticed, we are in a dictatorship. For two years we have been ruled by decree, or if you prefer, by orders “dictated” to us.
No legislature, courts very occasionally hand down a ruling that they do not enforce. The FBI surveils and harasses who it pleases.
Warrants are so 1790s, now they just write their own warrants and call them national security letters.

Highly unlikely there's this few cases. Most countries have sequenced maybe 1-10% of their cases, so there's likely a 10-100x factor for most countries. The highest one is Australia, with around 60%. These US is around 5%.
