Alarms were today raised after one in ten passengers coming into the Netherlands from South Africa this morning tested positive for Covid and a wave of suspected cases of the new super-mutant variant were spotted in Europe.
Around 600 passengers arrived on two planes in Schipol Airport, near Amsterdam, from Johannesburg — the epicentre for the new strain that experts fear is 40 per cent more vaccine evasive than Delta — hours after travel bans were put in place.
Some 61 of those on the planes tested positive for the virus on PCR tests after they were stopped at the airport, despite having to provide proof of a negative lateral flow test taken within 24 hours before boarding the flight.
It raises the prospect that tests are not being performed correctly for travellers in South Africa, fraudulent tests are being provided or lateral flow tests may be less able to detect the Omicorn variant.

It would come here regardless. I am no fan of either of them, but the idea that we can stop travel from one airport but allow travel from 100 others and stop a highly contagious virus is silly.
The real question we face now is how bad is this new virus? Generally viruses become weaker with mutation even if they become more contagious (cold viruses for example).
They are going to push panic no matter what, but I don’t yet see any stats or figures on hospitalizations or death for this new “variant”.
PS - it is mildly amusing that the man who condemned Trump as a racist for banning travel from China has now banned travel from a predominately black nation without blinking an eye.

My wife was exposed to covid and tested negative 5 days later. After a total of 10 days, she had full blown covid and tested positive. That’s both the rapid and lab tests. Needless to say, we both wen’t through covid. I’ve had much worse flues, so no big deal. We both got through it, the worst part was isolating for 14 days. And we are both well over 60.

…or maybe the PCR tests are prone to false positives? Don’t see any rationale reported for excluding it from consideration…

I see the reason why...PCR test kits.
The WHO denounced the PCR test January 20, 2021 which happens to be the day Plugs was sworn in as POTUS.
That is as stupid as shutting down businesses and bars.

It has been reported this strain is yet more contagious and less
deadly than the Delta variant which in keeping with virus mutation was less deadly and more easily transmitted than the original or other earlier variants.
Personally I believe the whole thing is total BS.

This variant may be so weak people can’t tell they have it and we know how lousy the PCR tests are. South Africa reports the cases they are seeing are very mild so far. I’m hopeful this variant is going to be a dud danger-wise.
It will take a few more weeks to know much.
