The Department of Education has removed from an official website booklets that invited students to discuss “homophobic” statements.
booklet used to teach relationships and sexual education (RSE) to first, second and third-year secondary students as part of Social, Physical and Health Education (SPHE) contained a list of statements, for discussion in classes, which have been described as “homophobic” by Fine Gael TD Jennifer Carroll MacNeill.
The booklets, intended for use by teachers in classrooms, were removed from the S phe.ie website, which is run by the Department-funded Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST), only four months ago.
The exercise included statements such as “All gays molest children”; “All lesbians are butch (masculine)”; “All gays are HIV positive”; “You can change from being homosexual”.
Other statements included “Homosexuals shouldn’t be allowed to marry” and “People are gay because of the way they are brought up”.
The exercise directs students to “read through the following statements and answer whether you agree, disagree or are not sure”.
“Those are homophobic statements, there is simply no question about that,” said Ms Carroll MacNeill. She said the booklets would make any LGBT+ pupils or teachers feel deeply uncomfortable.
The RSE Senior Cycle booklet, which is aimed at older students, also included poems about gender and fertility.
A poem about being a woman includes the lines: “I am woman/Created by god, perfection is me/Fertile nurturing, my body is me”. A similar poem about being a man includes the lines: “I am a man/Gifted I am/Born to grow and mature/Until one day I am destined to create new life”.
The Department of Education said that the materials were removed in June. However, the booklets were still accessible through web searches as recently as August.
A spokesperson said that following the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) review of resources, it was concluded that the booklets “should not be included in resources provided for schools” because they “do not reflect the inclusive standards and ethos which the education sector seeks to uphold”.
“The PDST has advised that the resources in question are no longer used in continuing professional development (CPD) training which PDST provides to teachers.”
The spokesperson added that the “entire team of advisers and associates” involved in RSE CPD have been told that the booklets “were not to be referenced, promoted or advocated”.
Ms Carroll MacNeill was made aware of the booklets by a SPHE teacher and has written several times to Education Minister Norma Foley, raising the need for improved RSE in schools and saying that there is an urgent need for a plan.
“When are we going to see a programme for junior cycle, senior cycle and primary schools?” she said.
“At every stage, when are we going to see teachers getting training, when are we going to see new materials? I think it’s fundamental to how we approach gender and sexual violence.”

It wasn’t the EU, it was American corporations that pushed through the referendums on abortion and gay marriage. All the major companies like Google and Facebook threatened to leave Ireland and destroy their economy if they voted the wrong way, and actively censored the opposition in the media.
