Robinhood Hacked, Millions of Names, Emails Stolen

Hacker socially engineered customer support employee to obtain millions of names and emails, demanded extortion payment

Mobile stock trading platform Robinhood (NASDAQ: HOOD) on Monday fessed up to a security breach that exposed names and email addresses for millions of users and “extensive account details” for what appeared to be very specific targets.

The Menlo Park., Calif-based company, which claims that about 13 million users trade stocks ETFs, and cryptocurrencies using its mobile app, said the breach happened on November 3 when a hacker stole names, email addresses, dates of birth, zip codes and additional personal information from its customer user data.

The company downplayed the extent of the impact, saying that only “a limited amount of personal information for a portion of our customers” was stolen but confirmed the intruder obtained names and email addresses for approximately 5 million people.

"We also believe that for a more limited number of people—approximately 310 in total—additional personal information, including name, date of birth, and zip code, was exposed, with a subset of approximately 10 customers having more extensive account details revealed," Robinhood said in a statement announcing the incident.

“We are in the process of making appropriate disclosures to affected people,” it added.

After an investigation, Robinhood said the attacker socially engineered a customer support employee by phone and obtained access to certain customer support systems.

“We believe that no Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, or debit card numbers were exposed and that there has been no financial loss to any customers as a result of the incident,” the company said.

Deep State going after those that profited from the Short Squeeze that hurt the international bankers who had sold more shares of Gamestop than actually existed. At one point the broker openly threw in with the deep state against their customers.

I was notified today.

I’m not sure what we can do about this sort of thing.

If you wish to invest, you have to transfer funds and take
part in the process.

What a complete b.s. statement. Financial losses to Robinhood's customers happens after the breach and all their personal data is sold on the dark web.

Just wait!

It's been five days. The losses won't start mounting for at least a few more weeks. Then look out!

Oh please. Robinhood is FDIC insured.

Only if you use Robinhood (not that I'd recommend it ..) for your online banking.

Investment funds are not FDIC insured.

...the attacker socially engineered a customer support employee by phone

Shows Robinhood allows customer support logins without two-factor auth.

I was notified today.

If you're using Robinhood for online banking, consider moving to a different banking provider.

If you're using them for investing your money, ditto the above. Robinhood is a shady company, they deserve to go under. Please move your money elsewhere, for your own financial safety and put a freeze on your credit report at Equifax, Trans-Union and Experian so credit inquiries from fraudsters cannot be run in your name, nor credit granted. You and anyone else @ Robinhood need to protect yourselves.

FDIC is for banks. SIPC is for investment account protection.

FDIC only insures up to a certain amount. If you have big bucks, you could lose all that. No need to be an @$$ when responding to someone.

I got an email that said my email was involved...but I have never used “RobinHood” nor been involved with any transactions with same. I suspect this is itself a “phishing” scam of some sort. I deleted said email without clicking any links from it.
