In 2013, New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, and Governor Andrew Cuomo conspired to pass rigid and likely unconstitutional restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms by residents of New York State. The law was passed with a rushed vote under a controversial measure in the New York Constitution which gives the Governor and legislative leaders enormous power. The members of the legislature were forced to vote on it without any time to read it. From syracuse.com:
The NY Safe Act was passed with no hearings, no testimony, no time for opponents to make a case to their legislators.
It’s not the first time a controversial bill was turned into a midnight emergency.
Others include same-sex marriage, pension reforms, requiring annual teacher evaluations, and, in some years, the entire state budget.
There has been massive resistance to the SAFE act. From the dailystar.com:
One of the most controversial components of the New York SAFE Act — mandatory registration of assault weapons — kicks in today. Those who fail to comply could end up facing criminal charges.
But local sheriffs and gun rights advocates said they expect the vast majority of those who own such firearms will defy the requirement. And state police offered no details when asked to outline what, if any, plans the agency has for enforcing the statute, which was pushed through the Legislature in January 2013 by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
“I don’t know a single person who is even thinking about complying with registration,” said Jim Losie, owner of Losie’s Gun Shop in Oneonta. Losie called the registration requirement a prelude to eventual confiscation of such weapons by state government.

Canada spent $1 Billion on long gun registration—now viewed as a total waste.
They all belong behind bars. 🤮
Andrew Cuomo was not governor. The unelected David Paterson was filling out the remainder of Eliot Spitzer’s term.
Cuomo took office 2011. Safe act January of 2013
The funny thing is that very few complied with the unSAFE act.
Almost nobody registered there weapons, and nobody sold them, too them out of state or got rid of their standard capacity (30rnd) magazines.
How can a representative of the people, in good conscious, make a statement like that? Whoever voted without reading the bill is like signing for a loan without reading the terms. Do these public officials graduate from high school?
I remember a class in high school on reading but I graduated in the early 1960s. Sorry, I lost my head for a minute.

....mandatory registration of assault weapons....”
I’m sure that the powers that be (or were.....) clearly defined what “assault weapons” were for the benefit of the great unwashed.....
I was born and raised in (true) upstate New York but by the grace of God had the opportunity to leave that miserable state in the early 1970s and never looked back....
New York States’ motto is “Excelsior,” or upward, as in taxes, burdens on its residents, more onerous laws, etc....

The bill for NY State "gun control" was introduced to the NY State Senate by Governor Cuomo at approximately 1:00 AM,
without any read by the State Senate, and was passed.
Governor Cuomo was motivated by the recent mass assault in another adjoining State, and had this bill already written up and in his closet.
I repeat, at no time was the Democratic controlled State Senate given time to see, or read this legislation, much less reflect on it, or determine consequence.
It was written and modified in haste by the Governor.
The next day, the bill was sent to the Democratically controlled House which wanted to pass the bill, unread (!)
One or two Republican House representatives asked to read the bill entirely, met with resistance from the house Democrats, and several faults were modified and removed from the bill.
Unnoticed was the fact that there was no provision for Law Enforcement, or police Officers to have firearms.
Two weeks later, this bill was again modified to allow LEO and Police Officers to have and possess their uniform issued and approved firearms.
This FUBAR is what happens when you have a Democratically controlled Governor, Senate, and House.
The entire Federal government should take a lesson from this hastily written bill, especially when unread,
when you have a single party controlled Executive, Senate, and House.
Enough said !
It’s the collection and consumption of money that matters to government. Not the results.

"All three of the powerful politicians who rammed through the nasty SAFE act have been driven from office in disgrace.
These facts need repeating, and the mis-named "Safe Act"
deserves Statewide repeal, due to the Federal Constitution !
No one I know will obey
Uh, ‘disgrace’? To them it’s additional ‘street creds’ with the democommie party. Corruption is SOP with these assclowns.
550 cord, and a handy branch.
Article III, Section 3 of the Constitution.
Don't remember ObamaCare?
A good example of a legislative bill that is named to suggest exactly and precisely the opposite of what they are designed to effect.
Ya don’t say.
It makes tyrants safe, which is what all gun laws are designed to do.
