COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — A failure to limit global warming could mean a “death sentence” for small island nations like the Maldives, including the end of their livelihoods and cultures, the country’s environment minister said Wednesday.
A report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said earlier this year that the world is likely to exceed the 1.5 C increase in the 2030s, earlier than expected.
“The difference between 1.5 degrees and 2 degrees, for us, really is a death sentence,” Aminath Shauna, the Maldives’ minister for environment, climate change and technology, said in an online interview.
She said rich nations need to fulfil their Paris promise to spend $100 billion annually to help poorer nations cope with the impact of climate change and switch to cleaner energy.
So far, the Green Climate Fund established by the agreement has approved only one adaptation project in the Maldives, and even that took three years, she said. With climate change impacting the islands rapidly, by the time funds are approved, the situation on the ground has already changed, she said.
Shauna added that countries should also be given more time to repay. Because climate change didn’t happen in 10 years, the developed world and financial systems shouldn’t expect that the money should be repaid in a short time, she said.
“We really need to unlock the financial system,” she said.

They’re hoping to get-in on the gravy rain of “Climate Aid.”
Climate change Grifters
That says it all right there.
You who are about to die, we salute you. But I vote no money wasted on fruitless boondoggles.
Maybe we should move to the Maldives and cash in on this nonsense instead of staying here and paying for it with no benefit?
The Maldives is already dead—killed by global cooling back in 2000.

They don’t get to die twice!
LOL
It’s practically right on the equator. A minor change in the climate will have a negligible impact on them.
How much Maldive land has been lost to all the global warming that has happened since the 1800s?
I had a wonderful talk with an older Irish couple, of whom the wife was a rabid liberal. She pulled out the Maldives card, and I asked her, “How much of Ireland has been lost to Global Warming in the past 40 years? Ireland is an island, just like the Maldives have, so how many miles or feet of your country have disappeared due to the warming?” She was apoplectic and had absolutely no answer. Her husband smiled at this and tried to support her.
Honestly, these people have no viable response when you hold the mirror up to their faces. Do it in a public setting, whenever possible.
They can always learn to code like they suggest for the coal miners.
Climate change has been steadily destroying the Leprechaun population in Ireland for the past couple of hundred years.
She wasn’t quick enough on her feet to remind you of that.
;-)
People all over the world
join hands
get on the cash train, cash train.......
So, how large an area were the Maldives during the last ice age?
Fourteen days to flatten the curve.
Same old crap we’ve been hearing for 30 years. Oh and By the way, satellite measures reveal that the Maldives and most other south sea/Indian ocean islands are gaining surface area, ie gaining ground rather than slipping beneath the waves.
Guess that clown has never looked up the temps during the golden age of life when dinosaurs roamed and life of all kinds was abundant.
Or the fact that CO2 content was much higher during some periods of much lower temps.
Or visa versa.
Earth to leftists: math is hard.
Please do not practice without adult supervision.
Get money from CHINA.
See? Proof of global warming. Matter expands when it's heated up. The islands are heating up and expanding.
"Global warming - is there anything you can't do?"
I’ve been hearing this CRAP for 30 years.
I would like to hear her explain exactly what the impact has been.............
