Putin: US partly to blame for European gas shortages

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday said the U.S. is partly to blame for the gas shortages Europe is currently facing.

Putin, during an interview with CNBC at the annual Russian Energy Week, said that while European countries bear part of the blame for the gas shortages, the U.S.’s decrease in supplies has been “the cause of panic.”

“You see the problem does not consist in us, it consists in the European side, because, first, we know that the wind farms did not work during summer because of the weather, everyone knows that. Moreover, the Europeans did not pump enough gas into their underground gas facilities ... and the supplies to Europe have decreased from other regions of the world,” Putin said.

Hussein renounced America in Berlin (of all places!) when he declared himself a “citizen of the world.”

For the last 10+ years, the EU has specifically planned to move away from long-term, stable “take or pay” contracts with places like Russia and Algeria, to short-term pricing from futures exchanges.

I suspect part of that decision was due to what they assumed were permanent low prices due to the US “shale revolution” as well as assumptions that green energy would have taken over. I also imagine there was strong NATO and US pressure to avoid any long-term infrastructure projects with Russia.

There’s no pipeline from the US to Europe, so Putin can only be talking about LNG. US LNG production has increased (as has all US natural gas production) in the year since Biden took office. The only thing Putin is right about is that the Asian demand for LNG has been so high that they have bought the available loads from the US, outbidding the Europeans.

The real problem is a European energy policy that assumed wind power could be baseload power.

You are correct; and the huge rise in spot prices in the last month already brought Gazprom about $2b in extra profit - this is half of the cost of constructing North Stream 2.

Agree...although energy policy reliance on wind was brought about by Germany abandoning nuclear power altogether after the Fukashima disaster.

There is currently a push on in Europe to get nuclear declared 'green energy' to appease the left...bonne chance avec ça mes amis
