GOP Rep. Nehls: We Shouldn’t Fund Electric Charging Stations in $1.2 Trillion Bill, GM and Tesla Should Pay for Them

On Saturday’s “Fox News Live,” Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) argued against funding for electric vehicle charging stations in the $1.2 trillion spending bill by saying that the government doesn’t build gas stations and “General Motors and Tesla should be paying for these.”

Nehls said that while he does support spending on roads and bridges, he objects to spending on charging stations for electric vehicles, and “We shouldn’t be using taxpayer dollars to fund that. When’s the American — when has government ever built a gas station? So, why are we spending billions of dollars on putting these electrical vehicle stations around the country when only 2% of our vehicles today are electric?”

He added, “The idea that the taxpayer is going to be building and paying for these electric charging stations around the country, when only 2% of the vehicles on the road today are electric. Maybe, you know, government motors — General Motors and Tesla should be paying for these.”

Bingo!

On the other hand the interstate highway system helped develop this country. Defense (government)related. So did the internet.

Just how will these stations lead the country to our nations development?

Let whomever is going to be selling the electric to these EV owners foot the bill for the installation. My guess is when it becomes profitable to do so, gas stations will be putting them in as an additional source of revenue.

Oh goody. Just what we need. More loading of the power grid. Some one mentioned that there are charging stations along I-80 between Elko and Reno NV. I don’t recall seeing them but I also wasn’t looking. And yup, the govt should not be using our tax dollars for that. Nearly all the casinos around here have charging stations at them. I don’t think tesla paid for them but....................

Amazing that we have no leadership in the Democratic Party. All lemmings.

Who is to way that electric cars are the way to go?

Hydrogen powered vehicles produce their own energy. Clean. Safe.

Tesla, and others, are doing fine installing chargers. No need for government spending.

Agree totally. If the government funds them, then we’ll end up with charging stations where they won’t be used. Just like that Alaska bridge to nowhere.

Our son has a Tesla. There are charging stations everywhere and he has it on his vehicle. The whole car is an iPad with wheels. He has one year of free charges. It is a really wonderful car. And I agree with the concern about draining the grid. But in the meantime, no stinky exhaust. No noise. We live close to a college town. Lots of both.

“…when has government ever built a gas station?”

Something I’ve been saying for a long time. Somethings that needs to be shouted from the rooftops.

It’s NOT a constitutional power of the federal government.

Tesla does actually pay to have their chargers installed at small business's. They give the charger to the business as a way to promote the vehicle use by providing more locations to charge and pay for the installation. I know as I've installed 6 at 2 different locations and Tesla paid me direct. (This was a couple of years ago and that policy might have changed.)

Now that said, I'm sure the tax credits they receive more than make up for their cost.

“Nearly all the casinos around here have charging stations at them.”

Local governments have been, for years now, insisting new construction of shopping centers and casinos and office buildings have a certain number of charging stations, often free ones.

While that’s bad, it is local and not federal government.

And this is coming from someone that owns an electric car.

Gov does fund them via the “Tax Credit”.

The governor didn’t and doesn’t build gas stations.

If electrical power stations aren’t economically viable to stand on their own, the system will eventually crash under its own weight and it is a waste of taxpayer money. If they *are* economically viable then it is likewise a waste of taxpayer money as we are paying for something private companies would invest in on their own - likely the same ones building the gas stations.

Our local Walmart put in a bank of charging stations about 3 years ago. I’ve never seen it being used however, I bet you good money that WM is actively involved in trying to convert the nation to EV. The goal: 100% EV.
