Gov. Abbott flip-flops on illegal voting charge, calls for harsher penalties

Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday directed lawmakers to reverse a part of the massive voting restriction and reform package that he signed into law just three months ago that would have reduced penalties for illegal voting.

Hearst Newspapers earlier this month reported on the little-noticed provision, which lowered the criminal offense for illegal voting from a second-degree felony to a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail. Abbott’s flip-flop comes the day after former President Donald Trump pressured him to add a measure requiring an audit of 2020 Texas election results to the Legislature’s agenda in the special session that began Sept. 20. Abbott has so far declined to do so.

Senate Bill 1 had also made a slight change to require that a person charged with illegal voting must have done so either “knowingly,” as the law currently states, or “intentionally.” Abbott did not make mention of that provision in his call.

“The State of Texas has made tremendous progress in upholding the integrity of our elections,” Abbott said in a statement. “By increasing penalties for illegal voting, we will send an even clearer message that voter fraud will not be tolerated in Texas.”

Once again...

According to the LAAP-dog media, Republicans "flip-flop" while Democrats evolve their positions.

Not a flip flop. The lowered penalties were in place to get the original bill through. This is just politics.

And let's not forget that "flip-flopping" as a political charge began with Mr. "I was for it before I was against it" John Kerry, who is now Biden's Climate Change future scapegoat.

Flip-Flop and the Texas Governor are synonymous. This man is no Conservative. He’s far closer to a Bush Republican than anything. A Finger in the Wind Republican. Hoping that he judged the winds correctly again this time. The man has no Core Principles other than promoting himself. Period. Texas can do far far better. Texas deserves a man like Ron Desantis as Governor. The question is, do Texans agree? Or, are they content with this Poser?

Texas must do better. There isn’t time for lackadaisical governing. Sorry to say, but Abbott has no fire in the belly like Desantis does.

I’m with you, I’m not about to let the Houston Chronicle set me off against Abbott, as the LAST THING that Texas needs is a Democrat governor.

Abbot is a Trojan Horse.

Why is he allowing our country to be invaded through Texas….

“Why is he allowing our country to be invaded through Texas….”

What, specifically, do you propose he do that won’t get into a shooting war with the US government?

“What, specifically, do you propose he do that won’t get into a shooting war with the US government?”

A good start would be by completely abiding by the Texas Constitution and telling the feds to go take a long walk off a short pier.

Good luck there with that. Maybe West would try that, but the feds have all the tools they need to bring him, and the state, to heel. if you think not, you have NO CLUE what the feds can now do to Americans, without ever leaving DC.

It should be a mandatory minimum 10 years in a hard labor work prison where they work to support their incarceration costs. Also banned from voting for life and if caught in the state of TX voting an automatic 20 years in the same type prison.

The feds are definitely tryng to ignore the Constitution, even more lately than in the past, and SCOTUS is cowardly. The people seem to be split 50/50 whether they want to give up their rights (polls are mostly very misleading).

I have heard men say they voted for Biden to avoid conflict at home. My wife hates the Biden regime, but she is just one woman.

DECLARE A STATE OF EMERGENCY and mobilize the Texas National Guard to CLOSE the border. Let Biden authorize the first shot. The US Civil War started out over much less of a national security threat than an foreign invasion. With your chicken attitude we won’t have a country left, then the “2A” will mean chicken sht.
