On 20 August 2021, the U.S. Department of State released a fact sheet announcing Russian firearms and ammunition importation will be banned for a minimum of 12 months starting 7 September 2021. From state.gov:
New sanctions imposed today under the CBW Act include:
- Restrictions on the permanent imports of certain Russian firearms. New and pending permit applications for the permanent importation of firearms and ammunition manufactured or located in Russia will be subject to a policy of denial.
The ban is listed as a sanction pursuant to the Chemical and Biological Weapons (CBW) Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991, over the supposed Russian use of the “Novichok” chemical agent to poison Aleksey Navainy.
Navainy was poisoned in August of 2020. He has been critical of the Putin regime in Russia. This is the second round of sanctions imposed on Russia by the United States over the Aleksey Navainy incident. The first round of sanctions did not ban the importation of Russian ammunition or firearms.
The Department of State announcement says “New and pending permit applications” … “will be subject to a policy of denial”. The implication is applications that have already been approved will not be revoked.
If that is correct, shipments of ammunition and firearms from Russia which have already been approved will be allowed to enter the United States and be sold.

Approve their pipeline, but ban their ammo from import.
Who is this sanction truly supposed to affect?
Bans for US citizens, gives US Citizen’s guns to the taliban.
The American peasants not the Russian oligarchs.
Never liked Russian ammo anyways.
Except to Talebans. We paid them Russian mi8 helicopters...
What you don’t like personally is irrelevant
Plenty of happy Russian ammo users around
I suspect the Russian ammo manufacturers will move packaging to another country and get around the ban.
They should send it to China for re-packaging. Biden won’t do anything to make his Chinese masters mad.
I despised Biden from the day I saw him.
Well, at least a new market for cheapo steel case 5.56 just opened up for them in Afghanistan.
Hopefully some of the other eastern block ammo manufacturers will tool up fast to fill the void here. That steel case stuff makes practice more economical and probably helps to keep the price of all ammo down. I guess we will see.
Freegards
OK. We just EXPORTED several billion dollars worth to our reliable friends in Afghanistan.
LOL. I understand there is a place for Russian ammo, just not for me.
Their steel casing 9mm is more affordable than virtually all other non-Russian manufacturers. This at least put pressure on U.S. manufacturers to step-up production and reduce prices. That pressure/competition is now gone. Thanks Joe!!
VSTO and OLN have been trading over 52 weeks highs coming into the open this morning.
That’s exactly how they will get gun control.....bullet control.
They won’t have to confiscate the guns, what’s the point if you can’t get ammo.
I think it's fine but that's besides the point. Forty percent of ammo sold in the United States comes from Russia. Shutting this pipeline is going to be a disaster to ammo availability in this country as well as de facto gun control. Bulk ammo in military calibers has dried up. Prices have gone through the roof for what's left, if you can find anything at all.
This State Department is a disaster for gun rights and has nothing to do with punishing Russia. It's about punishing us.
So much for that Rugerinoff Blackhawksky I’ve had my eye on.
😁
Take a look at Wolf ammunition...at some point they moved production to Ukraine. The box has a big “Made in Ukraine” on the front. Probably the company saw this coming from a mile away.
Forty percent of *some calibers* of ammunition come from Russia.
Not 40% of all ammunition.
