Trump planned to be out by May 1. The Taliban sink back into Pakistan for the winter and early spring when the transition would have been happening under Trump’s conditioned departure plan. Summer is the Taliban‘s fighting season. Thus changing the withdrawal date to late summer gave the Taliban time to organize and be ready to take over without any conditions at all.

This change in date plus abandoning Bagram airbase without notice to Afghan government or military several weeks before the evacuation are the two biggest blunders Biden has made. I do not know why politicians and media supposedly on our side do not mention these two aspects of the bungled evacuation.
