The Monterey County Sheriff's Office will not be enforcing the Monterey County Board of Supervisors
"The sheriff has made it clear that he's not going to enforce this or discipline the employees if they do not do what the board said as it relates to mandatory vaccinations," said Chief Deputy and sheriff spokesman John Thornburg. "The sheriff also believes that whether or not to get the vaccine is up to the individual."
On Friday, July 30, the board said that all county employees must be vaccinated or qualify for an exemption. Other local governments including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego County are requiring their employees to get vaccinated or get tested for COVID-19 weekly. Monterey County is not providing that choice.
Thornburg said they are following the state's order when it comes to masking at the correctional facility and detention centers and testing employees.
At least 356 of the estimated 470 sheriff's office employees have received a vaccine through the Sheriff's Office clinic. It is possible that more employees were vaccinated outside of the office.
Thornburg noted that they did not talk to the board of supervisors before making their decision.
"This came completely out of left field. Nobody knew it was coming. It's just, all of a sudden, Friday afternoon, 'You have to mandatorily vaccinate everybody,'" said Thornburg.
The Monterey County employee union said a similar thing when they spoke to KSBW on Monday.
"[It is required] by law for them to bargain with us before they make these changes and they have failed to do so and we're not going to take it anymore," said SEIU 521 president, Dee Guerrero.
