Both directions of the interstate remain closed from Exit 71 to Exit 78.

GDOT expects to reopen one lane in each direction on I-16 by this Saturday, with all lanes open by the following Saturday.

Until then, eastbound traffic is being directed through Soperton while westbound traffic is being routed through Adrian:

“No injuries were reported in the incident, which Gov. Brian Kemp “a miracle.”

Ya think!!
You crash a truck hard enough to move a bridge 6 feet and someone usually dies. That driver must have soiled his Underoos.

I looked at the area on Google maps a couple hours ago. Soperton is all dark red roads. They’re cussing this I’m sure. A buddy said it’d be a good time to open a temporary hot dog stand there.

Not sure I see any problem here.

Just crash a truck going the same speed into the bridge going the opposite direction to the other side of the bridge, to move it 6 feet the other way.

There, instant bridge fix.

The bridge looks fine. Just get a crane to pick it up and put it back where it belongs and call it good.

Just get a come-along. Winch it back. Patch it up. Be as good as new.

I used to drive a truck. I also used to work for TDOT.

What the heck??? Looks like the bed of a dump trump was raised at the time the truck drove under the bridge?

Looks like they've got a plan now...

Crews assessing the damage. Contractors will help remove lift that hit the I-16 bridge.

Plan….

⏺ Demo bridge. Reopen 1 lane in each interstate direction by Saturday July 17

⏺ Continue demo during week. Reopen all lanes by Saturday July 24

I am shocked this did not crumble or just collapse.

Looks pretty good FWIW. Of course, integrity probably has been compromised.

Now this is what the “infrastructure “ bill is supposed to be used for. None of this “personal” infrastructure that they are trying to push.

Those beams look pretty straight, not bent from the crash. It looks like the beams had no restraint at the supports against lateral forces such as a truck too tall crashing into them. Bridge supports usually allow beams to slide or rock back and forth in line with the beams. Me thinks the design engineer did not design lateral restraint. Ergo, demolish the bridge.
