Terrance Hallinan was a thug who settled personal differences with fistfights even into adulthood. Despite that, he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and then the the District Attorney's office twice.

Hallinan's long-time aide was Ross Mirkarimi, who eventually became the Sheriff of San Francisco. Mirkarimi was accused of domestic abuse by his wife and later by another woman.

It’s a very insular political climate—in both San Fran and the state. I believe this is the reason Willy Brown advised Kamala not to run for president. He said she should aim instead to be attorney general and learn more during that service about how to be a national politician where the political climate is not so dominated by one side. Brown himself, while an astute politician, was only conversant with California and not a fit mentor for the national stage.
