In Tibet, the monks literally set themselves ablaze in protest of the Communist takeover. The Communists didn't care. After the 100th such immolation the monks finally figured out it was getting them nowhere.
I was in Hong Kong when Apple Daily launched. It was quite a sensation. A bit racy, like a British tabloid, written in colloquial language with a lot of Cantonese slang, embarrassing photos and stories of celebrities and politicians - and very critical of the CCP. It would cover stories no one else would touch. As I understand, it immediately became the most popular newspaper by a wide margin.
Just before he launched the paper, Jimmy Lai called Premier Li Peng (a hardliner who people believe organized the military clearing of Tiananmen Square) a “turtle egg” (ie. bastard/son of a bitch)
The CCP immediately took revenge on Jimmy Lai by harassing his Giordano Clothing outlets on the mainland. I believe he stepped away from the business to allow it to survive.
