Here are two head lines from the same issue of the Grey Lady: Deadliest Phase May Be Here Soon and As Cases Wane, U.S. Looks Forward to a More Normal Summer,
Which one to believe?

Maybe the “deadliest phase” one refers to worldwide while the second one is more US-centric? India looks to be in very bad shape.
The NYT is one of the quintessential gaslight media outlets. They want you to be insane. Printing obviously contradictory stories is part of trying to make you insane.
“talking” out of both sides of their ass. It’s what the liberal media does.
No way to tell.
As far as reading material goes, I much prefer the apocalyptic fear porn to the lightweight, superficial pablum.
I won’t believe either headline.
“Only The Shadow Knows...”
You left out the precedent phrases to the NYT narrative
Due to Trump’s premature ending of lockdowns, deadliest Phase May Be Here Soon
Due to President Biden’s warp speed distribution of the vaccine, As Cases Wane, U.S. Looks Forward to a More Normal Summer
lol
No. Clearly not. Worldometer pegs India at only 227 deaths/million; that will change quickly for them - just as it did everywhere else - including for other countries reportedly having 'escaped' the virus' impact.
In contrast to what was reported by the media, there's no escape from the virus for those with impaired health and aged. Everyone else will just become immune...if the government hacks permit it.
The Old Grey Dinosaur must be on life support.
227 deaths per million doesn’t sound too bad, but when you have a population of over 1 billion that translates to a lot of people. And it will get much worse in India before it will get better because there is limited access to the vaccine, very crowded living conditions, etc.
When people are being buried in backyards because your crematoriums cannot handle the influx of bodies, I’d say that’s pretty bad.

If you make multiple predictions covering all probable outcomes then you can always point back to one and say “see, I was right!”
What ‘vaccine’? /s
They have ready access & government support for viable treatments. The unfolding health situation doesn’t warrant dramatization to justify additional tyranny.
We’ll be lucky to survive the crimes of the state without a more deadly mutation resulting from their permissive lengthening of the ‘bad flu crisis’ to serve their ulterior motives.
In retrospect, those who are vulnerable should have been the only one's quarantined while the rest of the population let itself get exposed all at once. Seems this would give the vulnerable the best chance since it would maximize whatever level of herd immunity could develop in the rest of us, which would in turn serve to protect the vulnerable when they came out of quarantine.
What is sad, is that this is not rocket science, brain surgery, or even rocket surgery. This is the common sense approach to how to deal with infectious outbreaks...it is tragic it got so "Fauci"ed up.
Yup. We’d have been at HI before last fall had they not shut down and closed the schools.
Been saying all that since last April.
At the time I posted the prior comment - a mere 24 hours ago - deaths in India were already crashing due to the wide availability of alternative treatments not permitted here in the states...but it wasn’t being reported that way.
I predict ‘news’ about India regarding the virus - good OR bad - will vanish from MSM (it’s already relegated solely to the Twit, and will likely be pulled).

I don’t remember these two articles, but I would guess that the answer is that we are OK through the summer here, because the virus prefers the cold, and because we are well on the way to controlling the virus, but the trouble may come in the fall, when the Indian variant, now currently in Oklahoma, spreads around the U.S.
