I watch a lot of UK history programs. There's a current series called "The Buildings That Fought Hitler." At the end of the 5th episode, the historian brags about how Britain was victorious against Hitler. It seems to be a regular summation of the outcome of Britain's involvement in WWII. They never admit, that if it wasn't for the U.S. supplying them war equipment, and eventually entering the war, that they'd have been $hit up a creek. They forget the Nazis invaded the Channel Islands, and held them until the war was just about over. And they did absolutely nothing to try to retake them.

Britain has been reliant on foreign imports for many years. Ships carrying supplies to England were destroyed in tremendous numbers in WWI by German U-Boats. It was devastating. But despite having experienced that devastation, and supply shortages, it doesn't appear that England did much to become more self-reliant, and begin producing the things they would need if war ever showed up on their shores again. I'm sure they didn't think that they'd be in the cross-hairs again so soon, but they really weren't prepared for the threats from Nazi Germany.
