Five Oregon counties vote to explore joining Idaho
Washington Times ^ | May 19, 2021 | Valerie Richardson

Five eastern Oregon counties voted Tuesday to consider joining Idaho, the biggest victory to date for the movement to split off from the Democrat-controlled blue state by redrawing state lines.

Citizens for Greater Idaho said that the five rural counties — Sherman, Lake, Grant, Baker and Malheur — approved measures directing county commissioners to promote the concept of border relocation, joining two other counties, Union and Jefferson, that did so in November.

The Nov. 3 election also saw two other counties defeat the Greater Idaho proposal, but on Tuesday, all five counties with the initiatives on the ballot passed them.

“This election proves that rural Oregon wants out of Oregon. If Oregon really believes in liberal values such as self-determination, the Legislature won’t hold our counties captive against our will,” said Mike McCarter, president of Citizens for Greater Idaho. “If we’re allowed to vote for which government officials we want, we should be allowed to vote for which government we want as well.”

"The idea is a longshot, of course,"

Yes. The #ComDems running Oregon will never let people who produce their food be free from slavery to the Portland crowd.

I wish they would want to create a new state instead. Might as well play the same game as Rats want to do, but be successful at it. One Republican house member and two Republican senators would be better than strengthening the already red state of ID.

This type of division works in many places in the country. PA for example could be split into three, with SE PA around Philadelphia being it's own state filled with leftists. We could fence them in and treat it like the zoo it really is.

I know, right? This is why the DC statehood issue will fade.

Right now the map is a patchwork, which wouldn’t work very well. Have those other eastern counties voted against the idea, or was it not on the ballot there?

From my *very* limited understanding of the law it takes a majority of the counties voting to make it legal to “explore other options.”

If the majority of Oregon counties vote to break away from Oregon and the majority of Idaho counties vote to accept the former Oregon counties where is the rub?
Sure, Portland would pitch a fit about the spouse it’s long battered leaving but wouldn’t that just be details for the lawyers to handle? Like a messy divorce?

I know, I know, getting the new marriage of Ore-Ida recognized by FedGov is another kettle of fish.
But hey, not like the demoncrats pay attention to the Constitution anyway.
Hussein the Kenyan Usurper wanted to “fundamentally change” the country so lets play his game to OUR advantage.

Californians are already invading Idaho. It wont take too much time to destroy the locals and take over.

Just about everything East of the Cascades have absolutely no representation anymore. The politics of Portland, Salem and Eugene dominate the whole state.

Yes.

I know very little about the region, but it’s clear the Big City #ComDems totally control the state.

I’ve want to be removed from that plague if I lived there.

I wish them luck.

Doubt anything comes of it, except some twisted news coverage of it.

That is why there have been discussions of introducing an Electoral College system at the state level in the US: this would help strike a balance between rural and urban interests by giving the former a real voice in state politics.

Yes. #ComDem controlled cities are truly insane.

They have not become involved in it yet. I suspect most of them want out, none of them have any clout in the capital.

From the article:

The ballot language differed slightly. “Sherman County voted for a ballot initiative that makes county commissioners responsible for promoting ‘the interests of the County in the relocation of Idaho state borders,’” said Greater Idaho.

The other four counties “voted for a ballot initiative that requires county commissioners to meet periodically to ‘discuss how to promote the interests of [the county] in any negotiations regarding relocations of Idaho state borders,’” the group said.

The ballot measures are part of a larger plan to pressure Oregon and Idaho legislators to “negotiate an interstate compact to relocate their common border.”

The goal is to bring 22 of Oregon’s 36 counties into Idaho’s more conservative-friendly environs, a border reimagining that would require approval from both state legislatures and Congress.

“This election proves that rural Oregon wants out of Oregon”

It would be nice if it were true, but unfortunately it’s not. Just look at a map of Oregon showing the county lines, and then notice the eastern Oregon counties that have voted to be out of Oregon, and those who have not.

Yes, the voting did register some local sentiment in some eastern counties, but as of now the idea is not a workable plan.

The ones I’ve seen locally who have moved from CA have been running from things there. They do not want that here.

It is different in the cities. Especially in Austin and parts of Houston. Those places are magnets for idiot Lefties.

The key question is whether any Electoral Votes or congressional seats change hands if such a change is made. Aren’t there also counties in Washington who want the same thing?

It is possible that is happening in Washington. I am not familiar with that.

The county I live in is bordered on all sides by these 5 counties that voted in favor of this. Our county clerk rejected it from the ballot, so we never got a chance to vote. If we get the chance, most in the county are in favor. And we are asking our county clerk to get it on the ballot for a vote by the people.

That is also a problem for several of the other counties here in Oregon that would like to join up. We all know we stand a better chance with Idaho government then we do with Kate Brown. She is out of control!

If there are a lot of tax dollars flowing into the Oregon state coffers from those counties, they’ll have a very tough fight.

That said, hope they win. The current government of Oregon doesn’t deserve a cent from them.
