Boulder shooting suspect Ahmad Alissa bought assault rifle a week ago

The alleged gunman charged with slaughtering 10 people at a Colorado supermarket bought an assault rifle a week prior to the shooting — and was caught “playing” with it by a family member, according to new court documents.

Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa purchased a Ruger AR-556 pistol on March 16 — six days before going on a deadly rampage at the King Soopers in Boulder, according to an affidavit unsealed Tuesday.

His sister-in-law, whose name is redacted, told investigators that she saw Alissa, 21, “playing with a gun she thought looked like a ‘machine gun'” in the days prior to the shooting, the court papers say.

“Alissa had been talking about having a bullet stuck in the gun and was playing with the gun,” the affidavit reads.

The document notes that the sister-in-law — who was tracked down by detectives at Alissa’s home on Monday night — was “hesitant to mention” what she’d seen.

Gosh nothing un-usual with psycho eyes.

Could be MK Ultra went from idle to full throttle after Orange Man Bad was shuffled out of the way. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit.

There’s people in place now to move upon ‘crisis after crisis’.

hummm...I can't recall seeing a male, bald like that individual at age “21”....are they reporting his correct age?

Born in SYRIA, but left that country at 3 years old, where is mom and dad? where is brothers or sisters? did he have a wife / girlfriend? where is that person?

We only get info that the government will allow...something seems strange about this person...

AR556 Rifle - https://ruger.com/products/ar556/specSheets/8515.html

Both chambered in 5.56 NATO with a capacity of 30 rounds. Weird.

Well in this case, it did become an assault weapon. Most people just use them as fun target practice weapons. Every once in a while, a person has to use them as defense weapons.

What is weird? Was that part of a question you had?

"If his family had been honest about his mental condition he would have never passed a background check"

Did he go through an evaluation that took at least a few weeks for a mental health board to complete? If so, what was his psychosis? If you want to see an instant cure of all minor neuroses, simply try to disarm all of the families of neurotics and expose them to deadly attacks from violent criminals. Most people would avoid seeking mental help for say, phobias about masks, if any law to disarm all people with any and all mental conditions were to be passed.

But our judicial system could be nudged to start going after drug abusers in some kind of real way. It's already against the law for them to have firearms, but we know that they are armed in every neighborhood in the country.

That they’re pretty much the same thing but one is considered a pistol and one a rifle. Slightly shorter barrel and no sights make it a pistol?

Exactly. And technically that is a forearm brace, not a stock.

And.....

If you push the collapsible stock on the “rifle” all the way down you essentially have the same “stock” and characteristics of the “pistol” minus the velcro strap that nobody uses on the wrist brace.

To the average person this is all semantics and hair splitting.

The whole AR/AK pistol movement was what technically made green tip ammo illegal as armor-piercing ammo that could be fired from a pistol. The law stated armor piercing ammo for a pistol was a no-no. A law that was on the books long before the popularity of the AR/AK pistols began.

It’s enough to make you go bald.

I would argue that an AR pistol is inherently no different than an AR rifle in the shortest configuration. The few inches of the barrel makes little difference until you are trying to shoot at distance and you don’t get enough spin on the bullet for stabilization.

This is how the left frames the argument. They are concerned about “features” and “appearance” and that is what they use to attack the 2A.

It is my personal opinion that it is a mistake for 2A advocates to attack them on semantics instead of the core issue (firearms). Trying to pooh-pooh a bill or classification based on technicalities and “legal definitions” guarantees a loss. The public does NOT understand the difference like you and/or I do and in reality it makes little difference.

Stating that it was a “pistol” and not a “rifle” is not going to win this argument when 90% (or more) of people don’t understand it. That was my intended point.

I think he did manage to shoot himself.

First reports said that a man had shot himself in his car in the parking lot and had a bloody wound to his leg.

Too bad he wasn’t looking down the barrel then it happened.

When they focus on the weapon and not the person, they are engaging in deflection. Any time it’s deflection, you know they are lying to you.

"It has already been through courts that people do NOT have to answer the questions honestly on the forms."

The Democrats will use that in arguments to pass gun control bills. The feds still arrest some people who lie on the forms to pass background checks. The ATF even has guidelines for stopping transfers and making such arrests. The Democrats don't need to pass any new gun control laws.

If we quibble about whether it was a pistol or rifle, we’re not putting great intelligence on display. We’re only wasting readers’ time on semantics instead of discussing worthwhile information strategy.

There was a pretty good explanation up thread.

Short 20,000 ft explanation:

To be legally a rifle the barrel must be 16”. There are also overall length requirements and a few other nits that if they arent applied, you can put yourself into some special NFA (National Firearms Act) catagory. But basically its the barrel length.

One NFA option is the Short Barrel Rifle (SBR). An SBR can have a barrel less than 16”, but you have to get a Federal Stamp and approval for it. Costs an extra $200 for the stamp, and the cost of the extra finger printing and federal background check. But unless your state makes it illegal, like CA, you can get or build an SBR just by being registered and paying the $200 tax.

The AR pistol came about basically to skirt the tax stamp requirement of the SBR. This is why its always been a slippery thing for ATF as the intent of the law is to keep criminals from having a rifle they can hide under a coat or jacket. So you remove the stock of what would have been an SBR, and claim its a pistol that will be fired from the hand without the ability to shoulder.

Practically, as a pistol its very difficult to control accuracy due to weight and not having a shoulder to assist with recoil control, as one with have with a rifle. So to get around that little issue manufacturers came up with the arm brace. Used as designed, your forearm is now strapped to the gun to absorb recoil. It still is impractical for aiming with the brace. More of a shoot from the hip design. But shooters and brace manufacturers have made the braces so that without much effort, it can be shouldered, it just has the brace instead of a stock. Voila, you have in practical terms, an unlicensed SBR.

If anyone ever gets far enough into a legal battle with ATF, its possible they could make arguments that this whole SBR section of the NFA is not really enforceable anymore with the brace approved AR pistol, much less the constitutional argument. Thats why the ATF cant make any clear rulings on the brace thing.

Exactly, to the uninitiated it appears to be a short barreled rifle

"Seems to me it is more a stubby rifle but with a pistol grip in the common AR 5.56 platform.

https://www.ruger.com/products/ar556Pistol/models.html
"

The thing that looks like a butt stock is an "arm brace" with a strap that goes around the arm. In my opinion, it's a very unwieldy, heavy pistol with a barrel that's too short for commonly used 5.56 ammunition and too long for a pistol. A real pistol is more useful. But to each, his own. Many young folks think they're really cool...er, "sick," or something. It's all commando looking and stuff.
