Italy is facing another lockdown, as the government attempts to contain a recent surge of coronavirus cases, marred by the presence of new variants.
Half of Italy's 20 regions, which include the cities Rome, Milan and Venice, will be entering new coronavirus restrictions from Monday, March 15. The measures will be effective through April 6, according to a decree passed by Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi's cabinet on Friday. In regions demarcated as "red zones" people will be unable to leave their houses except for work or health reasons, with all non-essential shops closed. In "orange zones," people will also be banned from leaving their town and their region -- except for work or health reasons -- and bars and restaurants will only be able to do delivery and take-away service. Affected regions will be labelled red or orange, depending on the level of contagion. Regions that report weekly Covid-19 cases of more than 250 per 100,000 residents will also automatically go into lockdown, meaning that other regions could also be affected during this time period.
The health ministry said that the aim of the measures is to get the R rate -- the number of people that one infected person will pass the virus onto -- down to 1. Additionally, over Easter weekend, the entire country will be considered a "red zone," and will be subject to a national lockdown from April 3 to 5....

Corresponding with exponential increase in PCR testing cycles?
What % are vaccinated?
Poor Italy. The is the second Easter Holiday they won’t be allowed to celebrate in their churches.
I am guessing there are some beautiful Romanesque churches over there, still standing tall, not yet invaded by
‘undocumented immigrants’.
I’ve read other articles about this lockdown. Their biggest excuse is that only about 3% of the population is vaccinated. That is about the same percentage as the region of Spain where I live (Andalucia) and our cases have been dropping. That leads me to believe that they are cluelessly flailing about because the reality is they have no idea what do to and lockdown is the easiest solution.
Everything grows (or declines) exponentially.
It just depends on what the exponent is.
Killing Christianity, bill are you hearing me
Italy has had an entire year to expand hospital capacity, so the larger society wouldn’t have to carry the burden of this illness.
Why the heck didn’t it?
Beats me. I don’t understand Italians. Never have. Never will, I suppose.
Cases there are not growing exponentially.
Even more of interest, is how many are actually ill ... physically, not mentally.
I thought herd immunity would start to kick in by now so no need to do a lockdown in Italy. The population had been exposed for a year now.
When Italexit happens (and it will) CNN will need to spin like they’ve never spun before.
Same as most officials in the USA.

I have been married to a beautiful woman for 35 years who is 50% Southern Italian and 50% Irish. The Italian half makes me half crazy.
My S.O. is 100% Sicilian. Think of how I feel.
My SO is from Campania — just outside Napoli. But craze Sicilian beats craze Campania every time.
does no one realize the kind of diaster we’re up to?
The problem is that Europe didn’t have an Operation Warp Speed.
The USA has done 3 times the vaccinations that Europe has.
At 32 vaccinations per 100 people, the USA is 5th highest in the world, behind Israel at 107, United Arab Emirates at 66, England at 37 , and Chile at 34.
Europe has given a paltry 11 vaccinations per 100 people. Italy Spain France and germany are close to that average.
Except for Israel, UAE, Chile and Turkey at 13 and canada at 8 no country outside of Europe has given more than 25% of the vaccines we have.
